Mustangs Host Tulsa For Lawless Cup

The Week Ahead...
SMU will host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane for the fourth annual Lawless Cup on Saturday at White Rock Lake. The event will serve as senior day for seven Mustangs and is slated to begin at 8:15 a.m. CT.
Last Time Out...
SMU vs. Kansas/Texas - The SMU rowing team hosted a three-team event on White Rock Lake April 4, coming away with the win in 1st Varsity 8+ action over the crew from Kansas. This was the second victory for the Mustangs in as many races at 1v after defeating crews from Creighton and Central Oklahoma on March 14 at home. The Mustang crew finished in 7:37.5, outpacing Kansas, which clocked a 7:44.4 in the race.
Crews from Kansas and Texas took the top spots in 2nd Varsity 8+ and 3rd Varsity 8+, respectively. In the 2v, Kansas crossed the finish line in 8:09.64 for the victory, with the Mustangs trailing at 8:17.36. In the 3v, Texas posted a 7:33.7, Kansas finished in 7:55.5 and SMU rounded out the group at 8:40.6.
Scouting The Golden Hurricane...
Tulsa's Varsity 4+ crews both won gold medals in the Grand Final at the Knecht Cup in their most recent event last weekend. In an April 4 dual with Creighton, the Golden Hurricane swept all five races. To start the spring season, TU hosted Kansas and was outpaced in all five races.
Last Time Versus...
The Mustangs finished second in three of its four races at Tulsa during the 2014 season, including a runner-up finish in the 1st Varsity 8+ race where Tulsa took home the victory and the Lawless Cup for the third-straight year. SMU finished the Varsity 8+ race in an impressive, season-best time of 6:45.27 behind the crew from Tulsa who clocked in at 6:38.5. Creighton placed third in the race with a time of 6:51.28.
In 2nd Varsity 8+ action, the Ponies finished in 7:03.25 and were edged out by the Golden Hurricane (6:49.14), but once again defeated the Bluejays (7:12.45).
SMU's other second-place finish came from its Frosh/Novice 4+ crew, and the Ponies also competed in the Varsity 4+ race placing third.
Around The American...
UCF took Boat of the Week honors after winning the Grand Final of the Varsity 8+ at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake. Temple was also at the event finishing fourth in the Petite Final, while Connecticut finished third in the Third Final. In 4s action, Tulsa swept 1st and 2nd events, and Villanova's v4 reached the Grand Final. Connecticut will face Massachusetts, Boston College and Holy Cross this weekend, and San Diego State hosts UC San Diego. Temple and Villanova will travel to the Kerr Cup in Philadelphia.
White Rock Winners...
The Mustangs have won both 1st Varsity 8+ races at White Rock Lake this season. SMU defeated Creighton and Central Oklahoma on March 14, and outpaced Kansas on April 4. In total, the Mustangs have won four individual races at home this season after winning nine in a pair of events on SMU's home course last season.
Conference Favorites...
SMU's Varsity 8+ crew earned the American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week honor following a standout performance against Kansas on April 4. The Mustangs bounced back from their performance at the San Diego Crew Classic by outpacing KU's Varsity 8+ by nearly seven seconds in windy conditions. This is the second win for SMU in the event this season, as the group defeated Creighton and Central Oklahoma at home on March 14. SMU's 1v8 crew consists of a pair of seniors, one junior and three from both the sophomore and freshman classes.
Take A Bow...
The Mustangs will honor seven seniors following the Lawless Cup including Bailey Adams, Hanna Axene, Chantelle Conley, Dominique Conley, Stephanie Gentile, Shery Mugwagwa and Savannah Smith.
Mustang Moody...
Sophomore Savannah Moody was invited to the US National Team ID Camp in Chula Vista, California, where the national body identifies possible rowers to compete on the U-23 National Team.
Moody competes in the stroke seat on the Mustangs' 1st Varsity 8+ crew. Following the 2013-14 season, she was named Second-Team All-Region by the College Rowing Coaches Association. During the fall portion of the 2014-15 schedule, Moody helped her crew to a fifth place finish at the Head of the Colorado, and a ninth place finish at the Head of the Oklahoma.
Last season, as a member of the same crew, she was part of four first-place finishes as well as three runner-up finishes. The crew posted its fastest time of the season with a 6:42.5 finish on April 26 against Central Oklahoma.
American Standout...
Junior Miranda Zsigmond, a native of Los Alamitos, California, represented SMU on the inaugural American Athletic Conference First-Team last season. Zsigmond spent the spring season as part of the Mustangs' Varsity 8+ crew, while also racing in Varsity 4+ races during the fall.
The Champ Is Here...
First-year rower Jackie Galloway earned a third-place finish at the US Open Taekwondo Championships, which took place Jan. 20-25 at the Orange County Convention Center. Galloway was also named the 2014 Female Athlete of the Year by USA Taekwondo.
In 2014, Galloway was a collegiate World Champion, Canadian and German Open Champion as well as a member of the U.S. National Team. Her success in 2013 was evident as she took National Championship honors in the United States, Costa Rica and Israel. She was also a Pan American Open Champion.
During the 2012 calendar year, Galloway was named an alternate for the London Olympics and won both Dutch and Swedish Open Championships. She also earned a bronze medal at the World Championship and US Open. In 2011, Galloway was a Pan American Games champion.
