SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Lissi Lonsberry, Claire Oates and Vanessa Valadez all scored goals, as the SMU women's soccer team defeated Texas State, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in San Marcos, Texas.
The Mustangs improved to 3-1 this spring with the win, despite trailing 1-0 early in the game. The Bobcats opened the scoring in the 18th minute. SMU quickly answered, as Lonsberry tied the game in the 25th minute. Lauren Guerra slipped a through ball to Lonsberry, who beat a defender and fired a shot into the lower right corner.
At halftime, the score was tied at 1-1. The Mustangs controlled possession in the half and outshot Texas State, 5-3.
In the 60th minute, Valadez netted what would be the game-winner off of an assist from Chinelo Odobulu. Valadez dribbled through four defenders and then finished at the back post. Oates then added an insurance goal in the 70th minute on a set piece. Taylor Barg served a ball from 35 yards out to the back post, which Oates headed past the Bobcat goalkeeper.
In net, Shannon Moroney played the full 90 minutes for the victory.
The Mustangs play their final game of the spring on Saturday, April 25 versus Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. at Westcott Field.
