Mustangs Host Alabama, Central Oklahoma In Regular Season Finale

The Week Ahead...
The Mustangs host their final home event of the season when Alabama and Central Oklahoma come to White Rock Lake on Saturday. This is the last regular season event for SMU, as well, with the American Athletic Conference Championship taking place May 17 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey. Event action is slated to begin at 8:15 a.m. CT with the dedication of the Mustangs' Varsity 8 boat to follow.
Scouting The Crimson Tide...
Alabama kicked off the 2015 season with a pair of runner-up finishes at the Cardinal Invite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, before a home sweep of Drake and a split with Jacksonville. Most recently, the Crimson Tide picked up a win in the Novice 4+ Petite Final and was second in the Varsity 4+ Grand Final at the Knecht Cup.
Scouting The Bronchos...
Since Central Oklahoma and SMU's first meeting this season on March 14, the Bronchos picked up a win at 2nd Varsity 8+ over Oklahoma and earned five runner-up honors at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Championships in Sarasota.
Last Time Versus...
Alabama - The SMU rowing Novice 8+ squad took home first-place honors for the Mustangs against Alabama and Eastern Michigan during the 2014 season.
The crew posted a time of 7:47 to top Alabama and EMU crews that finished in 7:58.5 and 9:00.8, respectively.
In Varsity 8+ action, the Ponies' first crew finished in a time of 7:45.9. The Crimson Tide finished first, clocking in at 7:36.3, and the Eagles trailed at 8:03.3. SMU posted a 7:47.4 in the Second Varsity 8 race falling to Alabama (7:38) and defeating Eastern Michigan (8:47.7).
The Varsity 4+ Mustangs finished third in their race with a time of 9:07. Alabama took the top two spots as its 2V crew finished on top at 8:46.7, and its 1V crew followed at 8:53.0. The third crew from Alabama placed fourth (9:19) and EMU rounded out the field (9:48.9).
UCO - The SMU rowing team won all three Varsity 8 events to defeat Creighton and the University of Central Oklahoma on March 14.
The Mustangs finished over 16 seconds ahead of second place UCO in 1V8+ action, with SMU finishing in 7:53.1 for the victory. The Bronchos clocked in at 8:19.7 and Creighton followed in third at 8:27.0.
In the race prior, the Ponies picked up their first victory of the day in the 2V8+ edging out UCO, once again, but this time in a closer contested race. SMU crossed the line in 8:29.4, while UCO posted an 8:33.2 and Creighton finished in 8:39.8.
Last Time Out...
SMU vs. Tulsa (Lawless Cup)- The SMU rowing team hosted American Athletic Conference foe Tulsa for the Lawless Cup on April 19 at White Rock Lake. The annual Cup goes to the institution whose Varsity 8+ crew emerges victoriously.
Tulsa's Varsity 8+ crew crossed the line first in 6:44.6 to successfully defend the Cup. SMU trailed behind and finished in a time of 6:51.2 for runner-up honors.
The Golden Hurricane continued its winning ways finishing the sweep in 8s races clocking in at 6:51.5 in 2nd Varsity and 7:25.2 in the 3rd. SMU finished the 2nd race in 7:07.6, and the 3rd Varsity crossed the line in 7:46.1, with both placing second. Tulsa had an additional crew in the 3V, finishing in 7:48.7.
Tulsa finished 7:40.0 and 8:11.3 in 1st and 2nd Varsity 4, respectively, for wins. SMU's times were 7:46.4 and 8:39.1 in the events.
Around The American...
Tulsa's Varsity 8+ crew earned American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week honors for its win at the Lawless Cup last weekend. Connecticut picked up a pair of wins against Massachusetts, and San Diego State joined Tulsa with V8+ win. UCF continues to receive votes in the Top 20 poll and hosts Miami and Old Dominion this weekend, while UConn travels to Bucknell. Sacramento State and San Diego State will travel to the WIRA Championships, and Temple and Villanova are slated to compete in the Kelly Cup.
White Rock Winners...
The Mustangs have wins over Creighton, Central Oklahoma and Kansas in Varsity 8+ action this season at home. In the first event of the season against CU and UCO, SMU won three of five events to take the day. In total, the Mustangs have won four individual races at home this season after winning nine in a pair of events on White Rock in 2014.
Conference Favorites...
SMU's Varsity 8+ crew earned the American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week honor following a standout performance against Kansas on April 4. The Mustangs bounced back from their performance at the San Diego Crew Classic by outpacing KU's Varsity 8+ by nearly seven seconds in windy conditions. This is the second win for SMU in the event this season, as the group defeated Creighton and Central Oklahoma at home on March 14. SMU's 1v8 crew consists of a pair of seniors, one junior and three from both the sophomore and freshman classes.
Mustang Moody...
Sophomore Savannah Moody was invited to the US National Team ID Camp in Chula Vista, California, where the national body identifies possible rowers to compete on the U-23 National Team.
Moody competes in the stroke seat on the Mustangs' 1st Varsity 8+ crew. Following the 2013-14 season, she was named Second-Team All-Region by the College Rowing Coaches Association. During the fall portion of the 2014-15 schedule, Moody helped her crew to a fifth place finish at the Head of the Colorado, and a ninth place finish at the Head of the Oklahoma.
Last season, as a member of the same crew, she was part of four first-place finishes as well as three runner-up finishes. The crew posted its fastest time of the season with a 6:42.5 finish on April 26 against Central Oklahoma.
American Standout...
Junior Miranda Zsigmond, a native of Los Alamitos, California, represented SMU on the inaugural American Athletic Conference First Team last season. Zsigmond spent the spring season as part of the Mustangs' Varsity 8+ crew, while also racing in Varsity 4+ races during the fall.
The Champ Is Here...
First-year rower Jackie Galloway earned a third-place finish at the US Open Taekwondo Championships, which took place Jan. 20-25 at the Orange County Convention Center. Galloway was also named the 2014 Female Athlete of the Year by USA Taekwondo.
In 2014, Galloway was a collegiate World Champion, Canadian and German Open Champion as well as a member of the U.S. National Team. Her success in 2013 was evident as she took National Championship honors in the United States, Costa Rica and Israel. She was also a Pan American Open Champion.
During the 2012 calendar year, Galloway was named an alternate for the London Olympics and won both Dutch and Swedish Open Championships. She also earned a bronze medal at the World Championship and US Open. In 2011, Galloway was a Pan American Games champion.
