Dallas (SMU) - The SMU Women's Cross Country team will head north on I-35E to Denton, Texas to run in the North Texas Invitational. The Mustangs will be in a field with four other Division-I schools including host North Texas, Baylor, Oklahoma and TCU.
With a similar field and distance the Mustangs will try to improve on last week's second place finish that came without NCAA qualifier Agnes Sjostrom and their four seniors Karoline Skatteboe, Shanoah Souza, Melanie Stemper and Claire Trotter. Souza did run unattached as an individual and finished sixth and junior Holly Archer had the best result for SMU, finishing in fifth place with a time of 14:05.5.
All of head coach Cathy Casey's freshmen participated in the Bear Twilight Invitational with Cassidy Webber finishing in ninth place, Anneke Grogan finishing 15th and Rakel Barrientos coming in 20th. Every SMU runner slated to run this Saturday at North Texas.
Oklahoma is the only team included that was not in the field for last week's Bear Twilight Invitational, which Baylor won followed by SMU, North Texas and TCU. SMU is the highest ranked team regionally in the field at third in the South Central Region from the USTFCCCA preseason polls but Baylor is ranked 28th nationally in the preseason poll, the next polls will come out next Monday (Regional) and Tuesday (National).
The North Texas Invitational is a 4K race and will start for the women at 8:10 a.m. CT at the Eagle Point Cross Country Course. Four Non-Division-I schools, Tarleton State, Mississippi College, Wiley State and Southeastern Oklahoma, will also be running but scored separately.
