DENTON, Texas (SMU) - The SMU Women's Cross Country team left the Eagle Point Cross Country Course at the North Texas Invitational with the number two being the theme of the day.
In their second meet of the season, the Mustangs finished second as a team behind Oklahoma University. SMU's Shanoah Souza was the second individual to complete the 5K race with a time of 17:58.39, though she was running unattached to SMU so her time did not count toward team score.
Once again, freshmen Anneke Grogan (18:20.65, 4th), Cassidy Webber (18:29.70, 9th), Rakel Barrientos (18:36.64, 11th) and Robin Montemayor (19:19.30, 24th) had a strong showing for the Mustangs. Junior Justine Anthony (18:52.91, 15th), sophomore Rebekah Bosler (19:29.42, 33rd) and freshman Madison Pyle (22:15.96, 78th) rounded out the team score of 57 for SMU with senior Claire Trotter (19.43.00, 39th) also running unattached.
The 57 points for SMU put them 22 points behind Oklahoma, whose runners all finished in the top 18 individually. The rest of the field finished with host UNT in third, followed by TCU, Tarleton State, Baylor, Mississippi College, Wiley State, and Southeastern Oklahoma. The individual race winner was Tarleton State's Aly Coughlin with a time of 17:52.99.
SMU will stay in the area for their meet next Saturday, Sept. 19 as they compete in the UT Arlington Invitational at 8 a.m. CT.
