DeChambeau Stellar In Walker Cup; Named Golfweek Preseason All American

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU's Bryson DeChambeau went 2-0-1 as a member of the U.S. Team that fell to Great Britain and Ireland in the 2015 Walker Cup at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England.
DeChambeau, the 2015 NCAA Individual Champion and the U.S. Amateur Champion, was the only American to not lose a match in the prestigious amateur tournament, but Great Britain and Ireland defeated Team USA, 16 ½ to 9 ½.
"Bryson had a successful Walker Cup personally; however, I know he is disappointed in the outcome of the matches," SMU men's golf head coach Jason Enloe said. "Bryson is so darn competitive; I know he wanted to win badly."
In the first match for DeChambeau, the Mustang senior faced off against Ashley Chesters. DeChambeau was down a hole, with three remaining, but he birdied 16 to bring it to all square.
The pair would go on to equal each other's score for the remaining holes, and halved the match.
Heading into the final day of the tournament, DeChambeau teamed with Robby Shelton and defeated Great Britain and Ireland's Gavin Moynihan and Jack Hume 3 and 2. The Americans fell behind early, but managed to bring it to all square at the eighth hole.
DeChambeau and Shelton would turn it on from there birdying on nine and winning the 14th and 15th holes to win the match, 3 and 2. It was the only Sunday foursomes' match that Team USA would win.
DeChambeau's most impressive match came in his final singles bout with Moynihan. Moynihan, who recently announced he would join the professional ranks, was not a problem for this year's U.S. Amateur star, as the Mustang won decisively, 6 and 5.
The SMU senior took the early commanding lead, taking five of the first seven holes, birdying twice. Moynihan managed to get one back on the eighth hole, but DeChambeau rebounded and won on 12 and 13 to take the match.
Although Team USA lost the Walker Cup, it brought to a close an amazing summer for DeChambeau. He won two of the top amateur tournaments in the world, joining Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Ryan Moore as the only golfers to win the NCAA Individual Championship and the U.S. Amateur in the same year.
DeChambeau has also been recognized by Golfweek as a member of their Preseason All America First-Team.
"I am so proud of him and his accomplishments, and I am eager to get him back in the line-up for the SMU Mustangs," Enloe said. "Bryson's accomplishments and how he has represented our school is something that everyone should be very proud of."
Enloe said that he expects DeChambeau back with the SMU men's golf team when they compete in the Erin Hills Intercollegiate on Oct. 4 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. DeChambeau is the defending champion at Erin Hills, which will be the site of the 2017 U.S. Open.
After a sixth place finish at the Gopher Invitational, the SMU men's golf team will travel to Burlington, Iowa to compete in the Golfweek Invitational on Sept. 25, an event where the Mustangs finished second last year.
