Men's Golf to Compete at GolfWeek Conference Challenge

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team is back in action as it travels to Burlington, Iowa to tee off at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge, Sept. 25-27, at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
THE COURSE: The 18-hole Spirit Hollow Golf Course is a 7,223-yard track that will play at par 72 for the GolfWeek Conference Challenge...the course has a rating of 73.1 with a slope rating of 134 on bentgrass.
THE FIELD: Joining host-school Iowa (Big 10) in the 15-team field will be Army (Patriot League), Charleston Southern (Big South), Eastern Michigan (MAC), Furman (Southern), Idaho (Big Sky), Kansas State (Big 12), Long Beach State (Big West), LSU (SEC), North Carolina State (ACC), Pacific (WCC), San Jose State (Mountain West), Southern Illinois (MVC), SMU (American) and VCU (Atlantic-10).
LAST TIME AT THE GOLFWEEK CONFERENCE CHALLENGE: SMU placed second in the 12-team field at the 2014 GolfWeek Conference Challenge at Burlington, Iowa at Spirit Hollow Golf Course...the Mustangs finished 4-under par (860) on the 7,222-yard track, 11 strokes behind LSU...SMU had four top-25 finishers, three of which finished top-10...Ben Baxter led the Mustangs carding a 3-under par (213).

SCOUTING REPORT: LSU Tigers looks to continue its dominance at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge as it captured the title last season, before going on to capture the NCAA title in the Spring...three teams received top-100 accolades on GolfWeek's Collegiate Poll, with LSU landing at No. 8, Kansas State at No. 74 and SMU at No. 96.
LAST TIME ON THE GREEN: The SMU men's golf team finished 6th overall (+37, 889) at the 11th Annual Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., Sept. 13-14, at the Windsong Farm Golf Club...Alex Higgs and Austin Smotherman led the Mustangs with top-20 finishes... Higgs finished with a career-best 10th overall (+6, 219), carding an even-par 71 in the second round...Smotherman finished tied for 17th overall, shooting 8-over for a final tally of 221...Senior Bryson DeChambeau missed the season-opener due to the Walker Cup.
BETTER WITH AGE: The Mustang 2015-16 roster features eight returning members, including six upperclassmen...the only newcomer to the squad is Dallas-native Piran Adi.
DeCHAMBEAU STELLAR IN WALKER CUP: Senior Bryson DeChambeau went 2-0-1 as a member of the U.S. Walker Cup team...Dechambeau was the only American to not lose a match...Received preseason All-American accolades from GolfWeek.
