BURLINGTON, Iowa (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team sits in fourth place after shooting one-over par (289) through the first round of play at the 2015 GolfWeek Conference Challenge, Friday, at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
The Mustangs carded 15 birdies on the day, 10 of which came before making the turn, before bogeys took a toll on the back nine.
"The guys played okay today," said Head Coach Jason Enloe. "They left some strokes out there. Hopefully they can clean up some of the small things and come through with some better scoring."
With a score of 289, SMU maintains sole possession of fourth, 20 strokes behind the leader North Carolina State (-19, 269).
"It will take some good scores tomorrow to get back into the mix as North Carolina State played great today," said Enloe.
Senior Austin Smotherman leads the Mustangs, tied for seventh. Smotherman birdied six holes in total, finishing the first round 3-under (69).
"Austin played well today, about what I expected from him," stated Enloe. "He likes this course and his game seems good right now."
Senior Bryson DeChambeau finished tied for 15th shooting at even par. Alex Higgs shot 1-over (73) and is tied for 24th, while both Ben Baxter and Gray Townsend shot 75 (+3) through the first round and are tied for 40th place.
The tournament continues Saturday as the Mustangs will be paired with VCU and Kansas State in round 2, with the first group Teeing off at 9:45 a.m. CT. Visit golfstat.com for live updates. A full recap from the day will be posted at SMUMustangs.com at the conclusion of each round.
