Mustangs Finish Sixth Overall at GolfWeek Conference Challenge

BURLINGTON, Iowa - Led by junior Alex Higgs, the SMU men's golf team finished play at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge in sixth place. The Mustangs posted the fifth-best score of the day, shooting 284 (-4) in the 15-team field. SMU finished solely in sixth place (-7, 857), 15 strokes behind the first place finisher, host-school Iowa.
SMU's Higgs shot 5-under par (67) in the final round at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course. Higgs carded a three-round 210 (-6) and tied for seventh. The finish is Higgs' second-straight top-10 finish.
Senior Bryson DeChambeau finished two strokes back from Higgs overall. DeChambeau shot 1-under (71) in the final round to bring his three-round score to 212 (-4). The Clovis, California-native finished tied for 13th. Sophomore Ben Baxter notched the third-best score of the day for the Mustangs, carding four birdies to finish even with par (72). Baxter finished the tournament tied for 45th.
Gray Townsend and Austin Smotherman both finished just above par on day three, posting a +2 and +3, respectively. Smotherman who finished the tournament 1-over (217) tied for 27th, while Townsend finished tied for 44th, shooting 6-over par (222).
The Mustangs will have a quick turnaround and head to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Oct. 4-6 to compete at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate.
