SAN ANTONIO (SMU) – The SMU women's golf team held steady in the eighth position after the second round of the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational hosted by UTSA at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio. The Mustangs improved on their first round score by carding 3-over 291 for a two-round 9-over 585. SMU is currently tied with Kansas State.
No. 9 Arkansas (288-274--562) took control of the lead after rising two spots on the leaderboard with a second round 14-under. No. 23 Tennessee and No. 39 Texas A&M are second at 6-under 570. Alana Uriell of Arkansas extended her lead to 5 strokes currently sitting at 11-under 133.
Sophomore
Brigitte Dunne climbed 11 spots on the individual leaderboard firing 2-under 70 in the round to bring her two-day total to even par 144. Dunne carded an even 36 on the front nine before posting birdies on 10, 11 and 15 to go 2-under on the back nine. Senior
Lindsey McCurdy also finished 36 holes with the same score and the pair is tied for 14th in the 75-player field.
Head coach
Jeanne Sutherland commented on Dunne's play noting that, "It was nice to watch Brigitte play well today. She was focused and took advantage of her opportunities."
Alex Celli (T48) fired her best round of the season so far at 1-over 73 to improve her placement by six spots in the field and give her a two-round 6-over 150, and
Kenzie Wright also improved her score from round one, registering a 2-over 74 in the second 18 of the tournament. Wright is now 5-over for the tournament and tied for 41st.
Katie Page is also representing the Mustangs and is tied for 55th at 8-over 152, and individual
Ana Paula Ramirez is tied for 52nd at 7-over 151.
"Overall, we played okay today. The course was set up to score and the wind was down, but we didn't take advantage of it," Sutherland said. "We expect a tougher set-up tomorrow based on past years, so we need to play smart golf but still work to move up the board."
The Maryb S. Kauth Invitational concludes Tuesday with round three action beginning for the Mustangs at 8:45 a.m. CT with UTSA and Kansas State.
