DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman Hannah Miller is set to compete Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/ 10 a.m. CT at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Miller is one of 38 individual qualifiers that qualified for the national meet after a fourth-place finish last week at the NCAA South Central Regional.
"It is a real achievement to qualify for the NCAA Championships, especially as a freshman," Head Coach Cathy Casey said. "Hannah has worked very hard all season. She is a tough competitor and I really feel she can run with anyone out there."
This year's meet will be streamed live on FloTrack Pro with coverage scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. ET/9:30 a.m. CT.
The Invercargill, New Zealand, native will be the first SMU representative at the NCAA Championship since senior Agnes Sjostrom competed in the meet in 2014. Miller was team's top finisher for the fourth-consecutive meet at regionals with a time of 20 minutes, 26.3 seconds in the 6 kilometers. She was named to the South Central All-Region team and was the top freshman in the field of 144 runners.
Miller's runner-up finish at the American Athletic Conference Championship helped give SMU its fourth league title in the past six years and sixth in the past nine years. Miller will be joined by conference champion Anne-Marie Blaney of UCF, who also was an individual qualifier.
Miller placed 21st out of 211 competitors at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational after finishing the 6k course in a time of 20:37.1 seconds. She helped the Mustangs knock off four top-25 teams, including two top-10 teams at the meet. SMU finished 17th with 388 points, ahead of No. 10 Boise State (404), No. 6 Michigan State (439) and No. 20 Syracuse (454), who finished 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively. No. 18 Georgetown finished 22nd with 525 points.
She was third overall to lead SMU to a runner-up finish at the Virginia/Panorama Invitational in the team's third meet of the season. No. 19 BYU finished with 47 points to win the event followed by SMU with 89, while No. 16 Syracuse placed third with 98 and No. 14 Virginia came in fourth with 129.
