SMU Finishes Fifth At the 2016 All-American Intercollegiate

HUMBLE, Texas (SMU)- The SMU men's golf team shot a 2-over 290 in the third round to finish fifth at the 2016 All-American Intercollegiate Sunday. SMU finished with a three-day 878 (+14), and has finished in the top five in three consecutive tournaments.
"The guys fought hard this week," SMU head coach Jason Enloe said. "We just made too many mistakes to contend."
Austin Smotherman was SMU's best finisher at the All-American Intercollegiate, tying for 10th at 1-under (215), after carding a final round 1-over 73. The Loomis, Calif., native has now finished in the top 10 in three consecutive events. Smotherman carded 10 birdies over the three days, including two in the final round.
Alex Higgs finished with a three-day 220 (+4) to finish tied for 24th. The junior posted a third round 77 (+5). Ryan Burgess finished the third round with a 1-over 73, to finish just behind Higgs and tying for 26th (+5, 221).
Gray Townsend paced the Mustangs on the final day of competition, carding a 4-under 68. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native fired five birdies on the day, including three on the front nine. The sophomore finished the tournament with six total birdies and tied for 46th (+9, 225).
"I am so happy for Gray as he broke through with a great round today," Enloe said. "Hopefully that will get him going in the right direction."
Andrew Buchanan provided the Mustangs' final counting score, shooting a 4-over 76 third round. Buchanan finished the three-day tournament with a 15-over 231 to tie for 68th.
The SMU men's golf team returns to the links Monday, March 7 to compete in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Master. The three-day tournament is hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas.
"Our guys will work hard the next 10 days and will be ready for Vegas. They will need to play well there as the competition will be fierce," Enloe said.
