Round 2 Results | Round 3 Pairings

PALO ALTO, Calif. -The SMU men's golf team climbed five positions on the leaderboard after shooting a 1-over 281 on day two of The Goodwin, at the Stanford University Golf Course. The Mustangs are currently in 10th place, with a two-day 574 (+14). UC Davis remains in first place at 11-under (549). Host school No. 8 Stanford is in second place at 1-under (559), while Colorado slides into third with an even 560.

"We played much better today and moved up a bit," SMU head coach Jason Enloe said. "Our guys just need to finish off rounds better. We could have been five or 6-under today had we finished strong. Hopefully we are learning from these mistakes."

Junior Alex Higgs fired a 2-under 68 to lead the Mustangs in second round action. The Overland Park, Kan., native carded two birdies on the day, along with an eagle on the 16th hole, a 500-yard, par-5. Higgs jumped 50 positions on the player leaderboard and is in a 10-way tie for 71st (+7, 147).

Austin Smotherman finished day two at 1-under (69) to bring his two-day score to 142 (+2). The senior tallied three birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, respectively. The Loomis, Calif., native improved 30 spots on the player leaderboard and is currently tied at 22nd (+2, 142).

Sophomore Gray Townsend struggled early, but rallied with three birdies and an eagle on his back nine to finish even (70). The Winston-Salem, N.C., native now has two eagles, both on hole No. 7, and eight birdies in the tournament. Townsend is tied with Smotherman for 22nd after climbing 20 positions.

"I am really happy for Gray's comeback, as he was 6-over par early, and Alex had a great bounce back round after a tough day yesterday," Enloe added.

Ryan Burgess and Andrew Buchanan both finished day two with a 4-over 74. Burgess finished with two birdies, while Buchanan carded three, respectively. Burgess and Buchanan are both tied for 81st (+8, 148).

"Hopefully all five guys play great tomorrow and pull out a high finish."

The final round of play at The Goodwin begins tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. CT/7:30 PT. SMU will tee off beginning at 2:25 p.m. CT/12:25 PT, and be paired with Pacific and Nevada. All of the action can be followed on Golfstat or on the SMU men's golf twitter account (@SMUGolfM).
