Results: Third Round

IOWA CITY, Iowa (SMU) - The SMU men's golf team wrapped up its regular season with a fourth-place finish at the Hawkeye Invitational Sunday. The Mustangs shot 3-under-par (285) in the final round to finish the two-day tournament at even-par 864. Senior Austin Smotherman carded a 2-under 70 in the final round to cap his final regular season tournament tied for fifth at 4-under (212).

"The guys played consistent today and everyone was close to par all day," SMU head coach Jason Enloe said. "We made a lot of birdies, just too many bogeys to go really low and contend.

"I am really proud of the guy's effort this year, as we had a lot of adversity to overcome," Enloe added. "Hope the season doesn't end here, but if it does, I'm really proud of the group. Ryan [Burgess] and Austin will be missed."

Smotherman matched his first-day birdie tally with five in the final round, while also adding an eagle on the 10th hole, a 488-yard, par-4. The Loomis, Calif, native, opened his final regular-season round with back-to-back birdies, before rounding off the day in the same fashion.

"It feels good to end the way I did today by making back-to-back birdies," Smotherman said. "I didn't have my best stuff all week but I scored when I had too."

The senior finishes the season with five top-10 finishes, and three top-five finishes. He now has 16 top-10 finishes during his tenure at SMU, with seven top-five tournaments.

"I thought about it being my last tournament after I hit 8-iron to five feet [from the pin] on my last hole and walked up knowing I'd make it."

Sophomore Gray Townsend (+1, 217) recorded his third top-20 finish of the season, shooting even par in round three to tie for 16th. He carded three of his 11 total birdies on day two.

Senior Ryan Burgess wrapped up his last collegiate regular-season tournament with a 1-over 73. Burgess (+2, 218) caps the two-day tournament tied for 21st. The Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., native tallied three birdies on Sunday, to bring his tournament total to 10. During his four years, the senior has finished in the top 20 seven times, with two top-10 finishes. Burgess also won an individual title earlier this season at the Farms Collegiate Invitational.

Andrew Buchanan also shot even par in the final round, to finish tied for 30th at 5-over (221). Buchanan fired five birdies in round three to bring his tournament total to eight. Alex Higgs (+11, 227) finished the tournament tied for 57th. The junior carded a 1-under 71 in the final round. He tallied five birdies on Sunday, bringing his total to nine.

Kansas (-15, 849) won the tournament, while Iowa State and host-school Iowa (-6, 858) tied for second. Iowa State's Ruben Sondjaja (-10, 206) won the individual title.
