2016 Cross Country Schedule
DALLAS (SMU) – SMU head coach
Cathy Casey announced the 2016 cross country schedule as she heads into her 11th year at the helm.
After a runner-up finish at the American Athletic Conference championship last year, the Mustangs seek their fourth conference title in the past six years and sixth in the past nine years.
The 2016 calendar is highlighted by trips to Virginia and Wisconsin, where the Mustangs will line up against some of the best cross country programs in the country.
"We have a good strength of schedule that will give us an opportunity to face some teams that we haven't competed against in the past," Casey said.
SMU opens the season at the Bear Twilight Invitational, hosted by Baylor University on Thursday, Sept. 1.
The Mustangs remain in Texas for the next two weeks to compete at the Gerald Richey Invitational at UT Arlington on Saturday, Sept.10, and the Ken Garland Invitational at North Texas the following week.
The team then gears up for the postseason with a pair of competitive out-of-state meets. On Friday, Sept. 23, the Mustangs head to Virginia for the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational, before concluding the regular season in Wisconsin at the prestigious Wisconsin Invitational on Thursday, Oct. 13.
"We will head out to Virginia to get some good out of region competition. The Wisconsin Invitational is another high-level meet that will help get us prepared for our conference championship and beyond," Casey said.
SMU will have more than two weeks off before it competes at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship, which takes place on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Voice of America MetroPark in West Chester, Ohio. Cincinnati will be this year's host.
The NCAA South Central Regional is held two weeks later on Friday, Nov. 11, in Fayetteville, Ark. The 2016 NCAA Championships will take place in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday Nov. 19.
