RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (SMU) – Former SMU swimming standout Rachel Nicol helped Canada earn a fifth place finish in the 4x100m Medley Relay at the Rio Olympic Games on Saturday. The medley relay was one of two races for the Mustang in her Olympic debut.
Nicol joined Kylie Masse (backstroke), Penny Oleksiak (butterfly) and Chantal Van Landeghem (freestyle) on the relay that clocked a National Record 3:55.49, including Nicol's 1:06.81 breaststroke split.
Canada was the No. 2 seed headed into the final after winning its semifinal heat in a National Record time of 3:56.80.
Nicol earned her spot on the Canadian relay as she continuously posted personal-best times in the 100-meter breaststroke at the event, eventually finishing fifth in the final. Coming in as the No. 18 seed with a 1:06.88 entry time, Nicol climbed the ranks with an 11th place (1:06.85) performance in the prelims and an eighth place (1:06.73) finish in semifinals. Nicol went on to swim a 1:06.68 in Monday's final.
During her time at SMU, the Lethbridge, Alberta, native was a three-time All-America selection and holds the current program record in the 200-yard breaststroke. Nicol also won six individual conference championships, and was part of two conference championship relays. In all, she garnered 13 all-league honors.
