WACO, Texas (SMU) – Freshmen
Holly Lansidel and
Haley Zimmerman both earned MOP honors, and
Vivian Yowan won both of her events, as the SMU equestrian team topped Baylor, 11-9, in an exhibition meet Saturday.
At the halfway mark, Baylor took a 5-4 lead, after winning equitation over fences, 3-2, and forcing a 2-2 tie in reining. Over fences, Yowan won her first point with a team-high 84, to knock off Grace Thiel, 84-83.
Nadja Tiktinsky claimed the second point with an 83-82 edge over Shanon Callan. In reining,
Olivia Pakula topped Kaylee Mellott, 66.5-65, before Lansidel bested Georgia Smith, 71-70.5, to win the MOP.
SMU jumped ahead of Baylor, 8-7, with a 4-2 win in a six-rider equitation on the flat discipline.
Laura Weske led off for SMU and won the first point with a 77-75 edge over Madeline Berg.
Alexandra Murphy (Lexi) rolled to a 73-68 win, before Yowan won her second point of the day, a 75-71 decision over Grace Thiel. Coming down to the final ride, Zimmerman used a 77-66 rout over Baylor's Sarah Sharou to secure both the discipline victory and the MOP.
In the final event, horsemanship,
Ashley Mauney,
Jaclyn Landers and
Keaton Crawford all won to solidify the victory for SMU. Landers won the first point, 69-67.5, before Mauney scored a 70.5 to knock off Rialey Cone, 70.5-68.5. Crawford rounded out the disciple with a 71.5-70.5 victory over Brookie Bancoft.
The Mustangs open the regular season Friday, Sept. 23 at TCU. The last time the two teams faced off was in 2015 where the Horned Frogs edged the Mustangs, 10-9.
