DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team picked up six victories on day one of Metroplex Mania Friday at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Mustangs captured five of seven singles matches and one win in doubles play in the first round of action.

SMU opened up play in No. 1 doubles with Anzhelika Shapovalova and Karina Traxler registering a 6-1 victory against Arizona's Marie Van Aelst and Gitte Heynemans. Tiffany Hollebeck paired up with Texas A&M's Riley McQuaid for a convincing 6-1 win against Northwestern State's Ela Iwaniuk and Judit Castillo.

Shapovalova advanced to the semifinals in No. 1 singles after defeating Abilene Christian's Lucile Pothier, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-2. In No. 2 singles, Ana Perez-Lopez also moved on to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Georgia State's Daniela Ramirez.
 
Sarai Monarrez Yesaki saw her first action of the fall season recording a 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory against Northwestern State's Ela Iwaniuk in No. 3 singles.

Nicole Petchey recorded her third victory of the season after a 6-1, 7-5 win against Abilene Christian's Nini Memishishi in No. 4 singles, while Tiffany Hollebeck defeated UT Arlington's Carla Cerdan 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 5 singles.

Tournament play resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. with semifinals of doubles.
