WASHINGTON, D.C. (SMU/NCAA) – An own goal in the 110th minute proved to be the game-winner as the No. 10 SMU men's soccer team defeated No. 11 Georgetown, 2-1, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 17-2-1 and advance to the Third Round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship for the second time in three seasons. It was SMU's first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
The 14th seeded Hoyas finish the season 14-4-2 and dropped to 0-2 all-time against the Mustangs.
The own goal deflection came off a shot from
Emil Cuello, who finished with three shots for the Mustangs. SMU was aggressive in the second overtime tallying four shots and finishing with 17 overall, including nine shots on goal.
The Mustangs trailed most of the match in regulation after Jacob Montes knocked in a cross from the left side in the 18th minute to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. However, SMU continued to attack late as the Mustangs got the equalizer in the 82nd minute off a broke corner shot by
Jared Rice.
Nicky Hernandez picked up the loose ball and connected with
Jordan Cano for the header to tie the match at 1-1. Cano, known mostly for his defense, has recently become a weapon offensively for the Mustangs as the American Defensive Player of the Year has registered three goals in the last four matches.
Although the Mustangs did not record another shutout, goalkeeper
Michael Nelson played one of his better games of the season. The three-time American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year finished with six saves, including making a diving block in the 103rd minute that surely extended the Mustangs' season.
SMU is now on a 12-match unbeaten streak and has won 17 matches for the first time since 2006. The win was head coach
Kevin Hudson's fourth NCAA Tournament victory and the program's 35th.
SMU will now face either No. 3 seed North Carolina or UNCW next weekend.
