FRESNO, Calif. (SMU) – In a 15 hour meet, the fifth-ranked SMU equestrian team forced No. 1 Baylor into an 8-8 tiebreaker decision, but the effort fell short as the Mustangs lost in raw score, 989-941.75.
SMU (5-3) opened the day with a 3-1 Equitation Over Fences win. Freshman
Vivian Yowan topped Savannah Jenkins, 75-68, to open scoring, before
Sylvia de Toledo used a 79-71 win over Shannon Hogue to earn the Most Outstanding Player honor. Sophomore
Nora Gray secured the discipline win with a 78-74 decision over Madison Day.
Following a 5 hour, 14 minute intermission to allow Baylor and Fresno State to finish their meet, Gray used a 75-65 rout over Samantha Howell to win SMU's lone Equitation on the Flat point.
In reining,
Keagan Snively and
Madison Steed kept top-ranked Baylor (10-3) at bay, riding to a 2-2 draw. Steed beat Ginger Chant, 70-69, for SMU's first point, before Snively edged Charlotte Green, 66-65, to close the event.
With the overall score tied at six apiece, SMU and Baylor split horsemanship to force the raw score tiebreaker.
Ashley Mauney led off with a 72-69 win over Kelsie Holman, before
Morgan Redwine topped Charlotte Green, 72.5-69.
SMU and Fresno State square off at 11 a.m. CT/9 a.m. PT Saturday. The Mustangs topped the Bulldogs, 15-4, last Friday in Dallas.
