ARCHER NAMED THE AMERICAN TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (March 28):
SMU senior Holly Archer was named the American Athletic Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday.
The Bury Saint Edmunds, England, native picks up her first career conference honor after running a season-best time of 2:09.26 seconds in the 800 meters to win the Bobby Lane Invitational last week. Archer has the fastest time in The American and ranks 11th nationally.
The senior also ran the leadoff leg of the 4x400-meter relay team that held off Texas State at the finish line to win in a season-best time of 3:46.19, which is the second fastest time in the conference.
Archer is the first Mustang to garner Track Athlete of the Week accolades this season and the first since Stephanie Kalu received the honor in 2015 (January 27, 2015).
BOBBY LANE INVITATIONAL RECAP (March 24-25):
The SMU women's track and field team continues to improve as the Mustangs doubled their win total from a week ago winning four events at the 38th Bobby Lane Invitational.
For the second straight week, Holly Archer and Hannah Miller claimed individual titles winning the 800 and 1,500 meters, respectively. Senior Shanoah Souza won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the Mustangs 4x400-meter relay picked up the win in the last event of the meet.
Archer paced the field in the 800m and ran a season-best time of 2 minutes, 9.26 seconds, while Miller ran away from the group in her first collegiate 1,500m with a time of 4:31.32. Classmate Charlotte-Tara Murphy closed late in the race and finished second in 4:36.05.
Souza dominated the field in the 3,000m steeplechase from start to finish. The senior ran by herself majority of the race and won easily in a time of 10:42.69. Anneke Grogan and Alison Esparza placed fifth (11:23.94) and sixth (11:36.01), respectively.
The Mustangs quartet of Archer, Chelsea Francis, Latessa Johnson and India Simmons held off Texas State at the finish line to win the 4x400-meter relay in a season-best time of 3:46.19.
After an hour delay and having to switch throwing pits midway through warmups, two Mustangs still managed to finish in the top-10 in the shot put. Jacquetta Cannon placed third with a mark of 48 feet, 8.75 inches (14.85m) and Daniella Murchison finished eighth with a toss of 44-10.75 (13.68m).
Anna Novosadova picked up two personal-best performances in the high jump and the 100-meter hurdles. The junior improved her hurdle time for the second straight week with a time of 14.89 to finish 13th. Novosadova was unable to continue in the high jump after a leap of 5-01 (1.55m) due to having to run the hurdles.
In the sprints, two Mustangs placed in the top-10 in the 100-meter dash with Johnson finishing sixth (11.72) and Francis placing ninth (11.79). Francis also finished ninth in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 24.65. Simmons came in seventh in her first collegiate 400-meter hurdles competition with a time of 1:02.85.

Second year head coach Cathy Casey and the Mustangs are coming off a sixth-place finish last year at The American Outdoor Championships. Casey will look to a senior-laden distance group led by Archer, Agnes Sjostrom and Shanoah Souza to guide this Mustangs' team that includes 18 underclassmen.
ALL-AMERICAN MUSTANGS:
SMU returns senior Tochi Nlemchi and sophomore sprinter Latessa Johnson after both Mustangs earned All-American honors last spring at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Nlemchi finished ninth in the shot put with a personal best throw of 16.77 meters (55-00.25) at the NCAA Championships to earn second-team All-American honors, while Johnson earned second-team All-American accolades after finishing ninth in the 200 meters. Both Mustangs set conference indoor records last year with Nlemchi recording a heave of 16.32 meters (53-06.50) to win the shot put title, while Johnson held off seven upperclassmen to win the 200 meters with a time of 23.48 seconds as a freshman.
WELCOME TO THE HILLTOP:
Both freshman made an immediate impact in the fall during the cross country season helping SMU end its two year conference championship drought to win its fourth league title in six years. Miller finished as The American runner-up, while Murphy placed fifth as both Mustangs were named to the All-Conference team. Miller and Murphy led the Mustangs to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional and both garnered All-Region honors after finishing fourth and 19th, respectively. Miller qualified for the NCAA Championships and was one of 38 individual qualifiers.
UP NEXT:
The Mustangs will have two weeks to train before heading back to the West Coast to compete at Mt. SAC Relays April 13-15 in Torrance, California.
