WACO, Texas (SMU) – The No. 8 SMU equestrian team was edged by No. 9 TCU, 8-7, Thursday in the opening round of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) National Championship.
SMU beat TCU in Equitation Over Fences, 3-1. Sophomore
Nora Gray opened scoring with a 172-169 win over Patricia Gill. She finished the season 17-9-2.
Vivian Yowan topped Molly Peddicord, 177-169, for her first point of the day, before
Sylvia de Toledo won her first of two points, with a 170-154 rout over Carley Barnett.
The Mustangs and Horned Frogs won two points apiece in Equitation on the Flat. Yowan, who finishes her freshman season with a 19-7-2 record, knocked off Kari Hancock, 162-150. de Toledo used a 164-155 win over Jayme Omand to earn her 70th career victory. The New York, N.Y., native finishes her career as the SMU all-time wins leader.

Michaela Dinger and
Hannah McCain earned wins. Dinger downed Josie Mootz, 140-124, before McCain used a 139.5 to beat Marah Huston, 139.5-138.5. McCain, an Abilene, Texas, native finishes her career with 31 victories. Sophomore
Ashley Mauney rode to a 144.5, but was matched by Rylee Morgan for a tie.
