ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (SMU) – Freshman
Kenzie Wright led the 41st-ranked SMU women's golf team on day one of the NCAA Albuquerque Regional, carding a 2-over 74 to place her tied for 24th in the 96-player field. As a team, the Mustangs sit ninth following the first 18 holes at 14-over 302.
"Overall I thought we played pretty well today," head coach
Jeanne Sutherland said of the Mustangs' round one performance. "I really like the focus all five of them have, and they battled well and fought hard."
No. 36 Pepperdine leads the 18-team field with a round-one 1-under 287, while No. 1 Stanford registered a 2-over 290 for second. No. 6 USC, No. 26 California and No. 40 Washington are tied for third at 7-over 295. The individual leader after the first 18 holes is Laura Kowohl of N.C. State at 3-under 69.
Joining Wright and scoring for the Mustangs in round one were sophomore
Brigitte Dunne and freshmen
Ana Paula Ramirez and
Faith Summers. Dunne sits at 3-over 75 in a tie for 30th place, while Ramirez (T-41) shot 4-over 76 and Summers (T-49) finished 5-over 77.
SMU fired 10 birdies, the fourth highest team total at the event, four of which came from Summers, who tied for the third highest individual total.
"I'm pleased with where we're headed, and we're taking a big step toward believing in our ability to advance to Nationals," Sutherland added. "They've really been giving it their all, and hopefully we will be at full strength tomorrow."
Action resumes Tuesday with the second round of play starting at 8:30 a.m. CT. SMU is paired with Duke and N.C. State, teeing off at 8:30 a.m. on hole 1. The top six teams and top three individuals not on an advancing team after Wednesday's third round qualify for the NCAA Championships held May 19-24 in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
