Mustangs One Of Six USTFCCCA Regionally Ranked Teams Set To Compete In Earlysville, Virginia Saturday At 9 A.M. CT

For the second straight year, the SMU cross country team travels to Virginia for the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational in Earlysville, Virginia. The 5-kilometer race starts Saturday at 9 a.m. CT at Panorama Farms.
In their third meet of the season, the Mustangs will compete against 11 teams. The field features five U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regionally ranked teams, including No. 29 ranked Yale.
SMU is ranked No. 3 in the South Central Region. Virginia (No. 10) is one of three regionally ranked squads from the Southeast Region, as well as William and Mary (No. 8) and Clemson (No. 15). Bucknell is No. 9 in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Other teams competing include Charlotte, Hampton, High Point, Loyola University Maryland and Northeastern.
Last year, Hannah Miller was third overall, leading the team to a runner-up finish at Panorama Farms. BYU finished with 47 points to win the event, followed by SMU with 89. Syracuse placed third with 98, and Virginia came in fourth with 129.
The Mustangs return eight letterwinners from last season's conference championship team. SMU is led by sophomore duo Miller and Charlotte-Tara Murphy, who each garnered all-conference and all-region honors last season.
ABOUT PANORAMA FARMS
Panorama Farms is a privately owned farm of 850 acres located off Earlysville Road, approximately six miles from the Grounds of the University of Virginia. The property has nine miles of cut grass trails and 30 miles of wooded mountain bike trails. There are two different 5K courses, as well as a 6K, an 8K and a 10K course, each with a common starting line and finish line. The courses are laid out entirely on rolling grass fields that are maintained year-round. The courses are exceptionally spectator friendly. The home of the Virginia cross country teams, Panorama Farms was the site of the 2006 and 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Cross Country Championships and the 2013 and 2015 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. Panorama Farms will also be the site of the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in 2016 and 2017.

LAST TIME AT VIRGINIA/PANORAMA FARMS INVITATIONAL (SEPT. 23, 2016)
Hannah Miller was third overall to lead the team to a runner-up finish at the Virginia/Panorama Invitational Friday morning at Panorama Farms. No. 19 BYU finished with 47 points to win the event followed by SMU with 89, while No. 16 Syracuse placed third with 98 and No. 14 Virginia came in fourth with 129. Miller led a trio of Mustangs, who finished in the top-10 at the 5-kilometer race with a third-place finish in 17 minutes, 10.3 seconds. Charlotte-Tara Murphy finished in ninth-place finish (17:25.7), while Holly Archer placed 10th in a time of 17:27.3. SMU also got contribution from Agnes Sjostrom, Marlene Gomez-Islinger and Rakel Barrientos. The trio ran in a pack a majority of the race with Sjostrom finishing 33rd (18:06.5), Gomez-Islinger placing 34th (18:06.7) and Barrientos finishing 35th (18:07.4).
LAST TIME OUT AS A TEAM – GERALD RICHEY INVITATIONAL (SEPT. 16, 2017)
Charlotte-Tara Murphy led the pack from start to finish to lead SMU to the Gerald Richey Invitational team title last week Saturday at Lynn Creek Park. The Mustangs claimed the top-five spots to win with 15 points, while UT Arlington finished second with 42 points. Murphy led the way as she collected her first individual title of the season finishing the 5 kilometers race in 17 minutes, 46.3 seconds. The Bury St. Edmunds, England, native won the event a year ago in just her second collegiate race.
MUSTANGS IN THE USTFCCCA REGIONAL POLL
SMU is ranked third in the latest USTFCCCA South Central Regional Coaches' Poll. SMU is the highest ranking American Athletic Conference team in its respective regional rankings with Tulane, Temple and Tulsa all ranked 10th in the South Central, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest, respectively. Connecticut is ranked 12th in the Northeast.

Hannah Miller is the top returning Mustang after a freshman campaign last season that culminated with a trip to the NCAA Championship. The Invercargill, New Zealand, native was the first SMU representative at the NCAA Championship since Agnes Sjostrom competed in the meet in 2014. Miller was the team's top finisher in the last five meets of the season, including a fourth-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional. At the conference championship, Miller earned runner-up honors to help propel the Mustangs to their fourth league title in the past six years and sixth in the last nine years. Murphy was one of SMU's top finishers a year ago in her first season on the Hilltop as she placed in the top-20 in five of the six meets she competed in. Charlotte-Tara Murphy was the Mustangs top finisher in the first two meets of the year, including a win at the Gerald Richey Invitational (5K) in a personal best time of 17:23.8. Murphy finished last season with a fifth-place showing at the conference championship and 19th place finish at the regional.
In her second year on the Hilltop, Murphy has been the Mustangs top-finisher placing eighth in the 4K at the Bear Twilight Invitational (Sept. 1) in a school record time of 13:44.5. Murphy led the Mustangs to a team title at the Gerald Richey Invitational last week claiming the individual title in the 5K with a time of 17:46.3.

Cathy Casey has been the head of the Mustangs' cross country program since 2005 and has played a pivotal role in the programs swift rise to national prominence. She has led the Mustangs to four league titles in the past six years and six in the last nine years. During each of the championship seasons, she earned Coach of the Year honors. Last season, SMU won the conference title after placing six in the top-20 to record 45 points and edge two-time defending champion Tulsa by two points (47).

SMU recorded 45 points to edge two-time defending champion Tulsa by two points (47). Memphis finished third with 96 points. The Mustangs picked up their fourth league title in the past six years and sixth in the past nine years. SMU had four runners make the all-conference team, led by freshman Hannah Miller's runner-up performance. The Invercargill, New Zealand, native was the top Mustangs finisher for the third-consecutive meet, finishing the 6-kilometer race in a time of 20 minutes, 23.7 seconds. Her classmate Charlotte-Tara Murphy was also in the front pack and was the second SMU finisher with a time of 20:44.1 to finish fifth. Recent graduates Holly Archer and Agnes Sjostrom picked up key points for the Mustangs by placing sixth and 15th, respectively. Archer finished in a time of 20:54.5 to place one spot better than she did in 2015, while Sjostrom had one of her best races of the season to finish in a time of 21:24.7.
UP NEXT
SMU will train for two weeks before returning to action to conclude the regular season at the Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 14. The meet is scheduled to start at 9:45 a.m. CT and will be held at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park.
