STANFORD, Calif. (SMU) – With the match tied 1-1 at halftime, a pair of second period goals lifted No. 1 Stanford to a 3-1 victory against SMU Thursday evening at the Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Mustangs (3-1-0) suffered their first loss of the season, while the Cardinal improved to 4-0-0.

SMU was outshot 24-10 in the contest, with five of those shots on goal. Goalkeeper Michael Nelson was active in front of the net registering a season high 10 saves.

The Mustangs got on the board early with Garrett McLaughlin knocking in a loose ball in the box in the second minute of the first period after a long throw-in from Bryce Clark. It was the first goal allowed this season by the Cardinal and it was McLaughlin's third goal of the year.

A foul on SMU set up a penalty kick for Stanford's Tanner Beason, who found the back of the net in the 38th minute to tie the match heading into halftime.

SMU was much more aggressive in the second period attacking the Cardinals defense. The Mustangs recorded eight shots in the period and three corner kicks.

The Mustangs remained close late, but a long ball from Stanford's Logan Panchot to the back post was headed in by Charlie Wehan to give the Cardinal a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute. The Cardinal scored again on penalty kick in the 72nd minute by Foster Langsdorf to extend the lead.

Eddie Munjoma and Clark both finished with two shots for SMU, with each recording one shot on goal. Colten Habecker and Dwight Williams Jr. both registered one shot on goal.

The Mustangs return to the pitch Saturday at 9:30 p.m. CT/7:30 p.m. PT against Santa Clara and will be streamed live on TheW.tv. Live stats will be provided on SMUMustangs.com.
