DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team (0-0) faces Wichita State (0-0) on Saturday, Jan. 20, at noon to begin the dual match season at home.
The Mustangs return to the court after competing in six tournaments in the fall and opening up the spring season with Metroplex Mania, where SMU earned 18 total wins against Georgia State, BYU and North Texas over four days.
SMU is 2-4 all-time against Wichita State dating back to their first meeting in 2007. The Mustangs last met Wichita State at home on March 10, 2017 as the No. 43 team in the country. The Shockers won that matchup 5-2. SMU is 0-2 against Wichita State at home.
In 2016-17, the Shockers held a record of 18-9 (.667) overall and 7-0 in the American Athletic Conference.
SMU will be led by both returning players and talented transfers this spring. Juniors Liza Buss and Karina Traxler dominated Metroplex Mania, going undefeated individually in singles and as a pair in doubles play. Buss earned victories in both her singles matches against BYU's Mayci Jones and No. 108 Kristin Rehse from Georgia State. Traxler defeated Hermehr Kaur of BYU, Tamuna Kutubidze from North Texas and Daniela Ramirez from Georgia State to stay perfect.
Following Wichita State, the Mustangs welcome Tyler Junior College (0-0) on Friday, Jan. 20, at noon at the SMU Tennis Complex.
