Mustangs Set For Matches Against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Iowa

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's tennis team is slated to take on Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (1-1) on Saturday, Feb. 3, and Iowa (3-1) on Sunday, Jan. 4, at the SMU Tennis Complex, Turpin Stadium & Brookshire Family Pavilion. Both matches will begin at noon.
The Mustangs return to the court after going 2-0 in last weekend's doubleheader against Tyler Junior College (0-1) and Abilene Christian (2-2). SMU defeated Tyler Junior College, 4-3, behind singles victories from Sarai Monarrez Yesaki, Ana Perez-Lopez and Nicole Petchey. The Mustangs nearly swept Abilene Christian, earning the doubles point and two singles victories before allowing Abilene Christian to gain a victory in No. 5 singles.
SCOUTING TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI:
The Islanders begin their season 1-1 after falling short to Houston last week. TAMUCC took the doubles point behind Hortense Boscher/Luna Dormet and Maria Soler Valverde/Maria Maldonado, but was unable to obtain any points in singles play. In the Islanders' victory over Prairie View A&M, four players picked up singles victories: Louise Trigona, Marina Vicens Miguel, Maria Maldonado and Maria Soler Valverde.
SCOUTING IOWA:
The Hawkeyes come to Dallas with wins over Creighton, Northern Iowa and Montana and one loss to Washington State. In the fall tournament season, Iowa was led by freshman Yufei Long who boasted a 7-4 singles record and a 5-3 doubles record. Before facing SMU, the Hawkeyes will visit Denton, Texas on Friday to take on the University of North Texas.
SERIES INFO:
SMU is 8-1 all-time against Texas A&M Corpus Christi dating back to 2002, with the only loss coming at home in 2014. The Mustangs defeated the Islanders 6-1 during the teams' last meeting in February 2017.

The SMU women's tennis team (2-1) earned two victories in Friday's doubleheader, winning 4-3 against Tyler Junior College (0-1), the No. 1 team in the ITA Junior/Community College rankings, and 4-1 against Abilene Christian (2-2). Against TJC, SMU claimed the doubles point off victories from Traxler/Buss and Perez-Lopez/Monarrez Yesaki and singles victories from the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots. Against ACU, the Mustangs again earned the doubles point, this time with the pairings of Traxler/Monarrez Yesaki and Perez-Lopez/Shapovalova winning matches. Singles victories were recorded by Anzhelika Shapovalova, Karina Traxler and Ana Perez-Lopez.
LOOKING AHEAD:
SMU continues its homestand with matches against UCF (2-1) on Friday, Feb. 9, at 5 p.m. and Northwestern State (0-2) on Monday, Feb. 12, at 4 p.m.
