DELAND, Fla. (SMU) – SMU closed out their two-game road trip Monday night against Stetson with a 3-1 victory in their first ever meeting.

The Mustangs posted the first shot on goal, but it was the Hatters who recorded the first goal on the night in the eighth minute.

Shortly after, the match, originally slated to begin at 6 p.m. CT, entered a lightning delay and later resumed after receiving the all-clear around 7:45 p.m. CT.

In the 36th minute, Junior forward Garrett McLaughlin evened the score with assists from Freshman defender Thomas Haney and Senior midfielder Emil Cuello to send the Mustangs into the half, 1-1.

SMU came out strong in the second half with a shot on goal early by McLaughlin in the 61st minute.

However, it was Junior forward Akean Shackleford who scored the game winning goal in the 69th minute. Cuello sealed the Mustangs win with a goal in the 78th minute.

Stetson's offense pressured SMU's defense for the rest of the game, but the Mustangs' defense stood strong.

SMU returns to action Saturday, Oct. 6, to face American Athletic Conference opponent USF at 7 p.m. CT at Westcott Field. The game is free to attend and will be streamed on the American Digital Network.
