DELAND, Fla. (SMU) – SMU closed out their two-game road trip Monday night against Stetson with a 3-1 victory in their first ever meeting.
The Mustangs posted the first shot on goal, but it was the Hatters who recorded the first goal on the night in the eighth minute.
Shortly after, the match, originally slated to begin at 6 p.m. CT, entered a lightning delay and later resumed after receiving the all-clear around 7:45 p.m. CT.

Garrett McLaughlin evened the score with assists from Freshman defender
Thomas Haney and Senior midfielder
Emil Cuello to send the Mustangs into the half, 1-1.
SMU came out strong in the second half with a shot on goal early by McLaughlin in the 61
st minute.
However, it was Junior forwardÂ
Akean Shackleford who scored the game winning goal in the 69
th minute. Cuello sealed the Mustangs win with a goal in the 78
th minute.
Stetson's offense pressured SMU's defense for the rest of the game, but the Mustangs' defense stood strong.
