WACO, Texas – SMU men's tennis finished up play at the ITA Regionals on Monday from the Hurd Tennis Complex.

"It was a good tournament for us," head coach Grant Chen said. "This is a huge event and it was really exciting to see all 11 of our guys compete down in Waco. Proud of what I saw from a lot of the guys. They played their way into the tournament and got better with each and every match."

Over the course of the first three days, junior Carles Sarrio racked up a 5-0 record and, after a trio of three-set victories, found himself in the semi-finals Monday morning, the first Mustang to reach the semis at the Regionals in a dozen years. Carles' run ended in a 6-2, 6-2 loss against the No. 2 seed and 29th-ranked player in the nation, Yuya Ito of Texas. After Waco, Sarrio leads the Mustangs with a 10-3 record across the fall events.

"I was pleased with the way Carles performed with wins against top players and three ranked wins," said Chen. "He ran out gas in the semifinals today but still, overall, a terrific tournament for him."

Both Gardiner Perotti and Roberto Rosales were still alive in the consolation bracket after the weekend ended. Rosales defeated Alejandro Vedri of Texas A&M, 6-2, 1-6, 10-4, to move on to the finals and Perotti topped Eric Rutledge of Rice, 6-2, 6-1. The two teammates met in the finals with Rosales prevailing, 6-0, 6-4.

"I was really pleased with the way Gardiner and Roberto responded," added Chen. "They came up with three-set first-round losses but were able to rebound in the consolation to get some ranked wins and eventually face each other in the finals. I always believe it's a positive thing when you're playing on the last day of the tournament. I'm really like the direction SMU tennis is headed. We are looking forward to two more events this fall, We have tournaments in LA, Vegas and Palos Verdes so it should be exciting to wrap up the fall with a couple more events."
