DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team lost 3-0 against No. 21 UCF in Moody Coliseum Friday afternoon (25-21, 25-22, 25-23). Freshman
Hannah Jacobs led the Mustangs with 11 kills, and
Meryn Kennedy recorded eight blocks.
The Knights (25-3, 16-0 American Athletic Conference) ended the match with a 25-23 win in the third set after holding off a late charge by the Mustangs. Trailing by five, 20-15, SMU cut the lead to two, 20-18. UCF maintained the advantage, 24-21, but SMU fought off the first two match-point attempts before the Knights scored a kill for the win.
Brittany Adams scored eight kills, and
Eva Linden added seven in the loss.
Montana Watts led the defense with 17 digs, and was one of four players with at least 10 digs.
SMU (11-15, 8-8 The American) outscored UCF 16-10 on the attack in the first set, but the Knights posted six blocks en route to a 25-21 win to start the match. The Mustangs took an early lead, 5-3, but UCF went on a 5-0 run and never trailed again.
The Mustangs led 20-18 in the second set before UCF went on a 7-2 run for a 25-22 win. Trailing 18-16, SMU scored four straight with two kills and a block during the rally. The Mustangs had five blocks in the set, but UCF scored 17 kills on its way to a 2-0 lead in the match.
SMU plays its final home match of the season Sunday against USF at 1 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies will follow the match.
