DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 5 SMU equestrian team honored its seniors with a 15-5 victory after winning all four disciplines against South Dakota State Saturday at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
With the victory, SMU improved to 8-2 on the season and finished the conference slate undefeated at 5-0. The Mustangs have secured the No. 1-seed in the United Equestrian Conference tournament, which will be hosted by SMU on March 30 and 31.
SMU opened the day with a 3-2 win in Equitation on the Flat.
Kirsten Ostling opened the day with a 73-52 win over Claire Garduno, before
Haley Zimmerman knocked off Taylor Duerr, 81-79.
Mary Elizabeth Cordia closed the event with a 78-71 win over Sydney House.
The Mustangs took an 8-2 lead after sweeping Equitation Over Fences, 5-0. Senior
Hayley Banas posted an MOP-winning 86 to better Jessica Martinez, 86-81.
Nora Gray followed Banas' lead with an 84-86 rout of Garduno, before
Alexandra Murphy topped Lacey Chorlton 83-65.
Vivian Yowan beat Taylor Duerr, 82-70, before
Brett Burlington downed House, 77-74.
In the western arena, the Mustangs won Horsemanship, 3-2.
Kara Vickery opened scoring with a 73-71.5 win over Mariah Wright, before
Michaela Dinger posted a 75 to down Whitney Vesey, 75-55.5.
Ashley Mauney closed the event and secured the victory for the Mustangs by scoring a program-best western score, 76.5, to claim the horsemanship MOP and down Nichole Zazula, 76.5-74.
The ponies closed out the day with a 4-1 win in reining.
Olivia Pakula opened scoring with an MOP-winning 73-71 win against Miranda Sullivan, before
Keagan Snively rode to a 67.5-66 win over Mariah Wright.
Holly Lansidel topped Madison Sullivan, 71-68, before
Madison Steed closed out the competition with a 72.0-70.5 win over Jordan Gates.
SMU goes on an SEC tour, visiting Georgia on March 2, before going to Auburn on March 3.
