DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 2 SMU equestrian team suffered its first loss of the 2017-18 season, falling 12-7 to South Carolina at the Dallas Equestrian Center Saturday.
SMU (5-1) opened the meet with a 4-1 victory in Equitation Over Fences. Sophomore
Vivian Yowan earned the first point of the day with an MOP-winning 85-72 victory over Chloe Schmidt.
Alexandra Murphy defeated Sarah Isgett, 83-65, before
Hayley Banas rolled over Madison Brayman, 80-38.
Nora Gray rounded off the event with an 82-76 win over Lauren Fabino.
South Carolina (2-4) responded to the early deficit with a 5-0 win in reining. After the break, the Mustangs tacked on two points in Equitation on the Flat. Yowan defeated Fabino, 80-77, for her second win of the day, before
Mary Elizabeth Cordia topped Brayman, 75-62.
The Gamecocks won the day's final event, horsemanship, 3-1.
Kara Vickery edged out Caroline Gute, 73.0-72.5, for SMU's only point in the discipline.
Ashley Mauney posted an impressive 71.5, which tied with her counterpart Paige Stopperich.
The Mustangs return to action Feb. 16-17 at the Fresno Invitational. SMU opens with United Equestrian Conference-foe Fresno State on Feb. 16, before taking on Oklahoma State the following day.
