TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) – Freshman
Tomas Vaise earned his 10
th win of the season with a victory at the top position, but the SMU Men's Tennis team fell short in Friday's 5-2 loss to USF in Tampa, Florida. The Mustangs fall to 7-15 while South Florida improves to 7-12.
SMU just barely missed winning the doubles point when the decision came down to the No. 3 match. Vaise and
Jan-Simon Vrbsky earned a 6-4 win at No. 1, but USF countered with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
Charles Nettlefold and
Roberto Rosales fought to a tiebreak, but lost No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (7-5), to clinch the point for the Bulls.
The Mustangs found points at the top and the bottom of the lineup in singles. Vaise's tenth win came from a straight set win, 6-4, 6-2, against Grayson Goldin. He was joined by
Eladio Fabregas, who battled to a third set in his 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 win at No. 6 against USF's Jourdan Kast. Unfortunately the Bulls overpowered SMU in the remaining matches, and took the conference matchup.
SMU returns home to start a three-match homestand beginning with Wichita State on Friday, April 6, at 4:30 p.m.
