SALEM, S.C. (SMU) – Daniel Connolly posted the best result of his young SMU career by finishing tied for ninth at the Clemson Invitational Saturday. The sophomore led the Mustangs to a fifth place finish.
Connolly carded a 3-over 75 in the third round of play to finish the tournament with a three-day 219 (74-70-75). The San Francisco, native, finished the tournament with nine birdies.
Senior
Gray Townsend shot an even-par 72 in the final round to climb six positions on the leaderboard and finish tied for 11th (76-72-72—220) at 4-over par. Townsend has now finished in the top-15 three times this season.
Freshman
McClure Meissner joined Townsend in the top-15 at 5-over (T15, 73-72-76—221). The San Antonio, Texas, native finished the event with 11 birdies. Meissner picked up his fourth top-20 finish this season, and has now finished in the top-25 in six of nine events this year.
Jackson Markham climbed six spots on day three of the invitational to finish tied for 25th at 9-over (74-77-74). He also had 11 birdies over the three-day event.
Clancy Waugh finished tied for 45th (+17, 78-80-75—223).
As a team, the Mustangs posted an 8-over 296 in round three to finish fifth. SMU took advantage of par 5s over the weekend, shooting 7-under over the three rounds and posting an average score of 4.91. The Mustangs posted 50 birdies during the tournament, the second-most among the field.
Up next, SMU will play at the American Athletic Conference Championship. The 2018 American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship presented by Visit St. Pete/Clearwater will take place April 22-24 at Innisbrook Golf & Spa Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida.
