
Mustangs Complete Competition At Season's First Event

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) – Mustang Track and Field competed in their first Indoor event of the season on Friday at the Arkansas Invitational highlighted by senior Daniella Murchison's first place finish in the shot put
Murchison was able to defend her first-place finish at the last season's 2018 Arkansas Invite from the Randal Tyson Track Center. The senior threw 13.53m on her first attempt which was good for nearly a meter better than the next closest competitor. Murchison would also finish in fourth in the weight throw.
Chika Iwuamadi impressed in her first collegiate race running a 24.66 in the 200m, good for seventh in the 32-runner field. Two other Mustangs finished in the top-10 in the 200m in Alexis Center and Ashton Woods. Brooke Shepherd and Jacy Sparks also competed in the 200m, finishing in 16th and 26th in the event.
Among other standouts, Svenja Ojstersek clocked in at 4:56.32 on her mile, finishing in fifth. Chelsea Francis ran a 7.37 in the 60m to finish in third, Alexis Center (7.63) and Brooke Shepherd (8.24) competed as well finishing in 10th and 26th respectively. In the high jump, Cassie Ackemann cleared 1.70m, good for a second-place finish. Right behind Ackemann in third was freshman Olvia Witt, with a height of 1.60m in her first event with the Mustangs.
The Mustangs fared well in the 4x400 with their top team of Chika Iwuamadi, Madison Pyle, Chelsea Francis and Ashton Woods recording a time of 3:45.66, good for a third place finish, trailing only two teams from the nation's top ranked indoor team of Arkansas. The time was the fourth fastest in SMU program history and the best time in the last four seasons.
Next on the slate, the Mustangs travel to New Mexico for the MLK Jr. Invitational from Albuquerque hosted by the University of New Mexico.
