DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's tennis opened the spring with a successful first day of Metroplex Mania inside the Brookshire Family Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex Friday.

The Mustangs started the day with a perfect 4-0 mark in doubles, winning all four matches by a score of 6-2. SMU then won six of seven singles matches, with the six victories coming in straight sets and the lone loss taking three frames.

Senior Liza Buss defeated Northern Arizona's Chiara Tomasetti, ranked No. 75, by a score of 6-2, 6-4. In her first match of the 2018-19 season, senior Anzhelika Shapovalova made quick work of Northern Arizona's Madi Moore, winning 6-0, 6-1. Classmate Ana Perez-Lopez was similarly dominant, beating the Lumberjacks' Cora-Lynn von Dungern 6-1, 6-0.

Two additional Mustangs defeated Lumberjacks, with senior Vivienne Kulicke dispatching Ellie Millard 6-1, 6-3 and sophomore Nicole Petchey topping Eirene Granville 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Katherine Jakeway beat Iowa's Danielle Burich 6-2, 6-2.

All six Mustangs who won singles matches also won in doubles against teams from Iowa and Northwestern State. Senior Karina Traxler and junior Tiffany Hollebeck teamed up to beat the Demons' Antonia Blattner and Ela Iwaniuk 6-2 as well.

SMU is back in action for the second day of Metroplex Mania tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 12, with a tentative start time of noon.
