DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's tennis closed Metroplex Mania with a strong showing against athletes from BYU at the SMU Tennis Complex Monday afternoon.

The Mustangs started the day by winning two of the three doubles matches. Seniors Karina Traxler and Liza Buss defeated the Cougars' Samantha Smith and Taylah Beckman, 6-3, then seniors Vivienne Kulicke and Ana Perez-Lopez defeated Anastasia Abramyan and Kate Cusick by the same score. Perez-Lopez fired her left-handed serve for an ace to win the match.

Buss, Kulicke and Perez-Lopez all also won their singles matches in straight sets against Abramyan, Polina Malykh and Smith, respectively. Freshman Katherine Jakeway was the first Mustang to win her singles match, quickly dispatching Morgan Hall 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Nicole Petchey, who beat Beckman 6-3, 6-3, rounded out SMU's victories.

SMU won 21 singles and 10 doubles matches throughout the tournament this weekend. The Mustangs are next in action on Jan. 17 with a dual match against Texas Tech at 1 p.m. at the SMU Tennis Complex.
