Mustangs Cruise To A Pair Of Opening Day Wins

DALLAS (SMU) – The Mustangs topped the Prairie View Panthers in both halves of the season-opening doubleheader on Thursday from the SMU Tennis Complex.

In the first dual match under head coach Grant Chen, the Mustangs swept Prairie View, 7-0, in the morning matchup before winning the finale, 6-1. The squad dropped just three sets across both ends of the twin billing.

SMU started the Chen area with a 10 a.m. matchup against the Panthers indoor and ended with a 4 p.m. outdoor meeting. They didn't lose a set in doubles in either match, They started by taking the doubles point handedly including Jan-Simon Vrbsky and Avery Pennywell shutting out the Panthers in a 6-0 win.

They continued the run into singles where they won 12 of 13 sets in route to the 7-0 victory in game one and were the victors in five of six afternoon matches. Junior Carles Sarrio and sophomore Roberto Rosales split the line one singles duties and dominated  as they both won their matches 6-0, 6-3. Other highlights included freshman Andrew Buhelos dropping just three games during his 6-1, 6-2 win and sophomore Gardiner Perotti rebounding after falling in his middle set to win his singles pairing, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

The two Mustang spring newcomers took straight set victories, Eddie Ross in match one and Huntley Allen in game two with Allen only losing one game along the way. Another freshman, Avery Pennywell, making his dual debut, came through with a two-set victory,

Freshman Jack Kite found himself down after dropping the first set in the afternoon match to Kevin Ugatecho, 7-6. Kite rallied, taking the second 7-5 before falling in a tense super tiebreaker, 10-7.

The victory gave the Mustangs (2-0) their sixth straight win in home openers and improved their all time record against the Panthers to 16-0.

SMU will hit the road next for a test against the No. 8 Texas Longhorns. The match is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. from the Texas Tennis Center in Austin.
