DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman
Nicole Stambo posted an NCAA Zone qualifying score and a runner-up finish on one meter to lead the Mustangs on night one of the SMU Classic Friday. The two-day event, which features six teams that made an appearance at the 2019 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships, is being held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium and concludes Saturday at 11 a.m.
In her first event as a Mustang, Stambo posted a six-round 267.60 to eclipse the 265.00 NCAA Zone qualifying standard. NCAA Zone D Diving Championships are set for March 9-11 on SMU's campus.
Senior
Erin Trahan led SMU swimmers on the night with a fourth-place finish in the Championship Final of the 100-yard butterfly, covering the distance in 53.48.
Junior
Gabi Grobler and sophomore
Elise Johnson had career nights for the Ponies, both posting a pair of personal-best performances. Grobler did so in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.21) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.95), while Johnson's time in the 400-yard individual medley (4:29.98) and 100 breast (1:04.39) topped her previous best.
The Mustangs earned their highest relay placement of the night as
Felicia Anderson, Grobler, Trahan and
Sam Smith teamed up for a fourth-place finish in the opening 400-yard medley relay, clocking in at 3:38.97.
The Mustangs are currently sixth in the team standings with 108 points. No. 13 Auburn leads the field at 171.

The Classic features eight swimmers and one diver from each competing institution. Swimmers may swim three events per day, one of which must be a relay. Each team will enter one swimmer per heat (Consolation & Championship), while relays will only have a Championship heat. Diving events will consist of six optional dives on 1 meter and 3 meter boards.
