Nov 1

Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – Freshman Kaylyn Winkler scored a season-high 19 kills to lead SMU to a five-set win at Memphis Friday night (19-25, 25-16, 27-25, 19-25, 15-13). With the win, SMU improved to 15-6, 8-3 in the American Athletic Conference, and climbed into a tie with Houston for first-place in the west division.

Memphis won the fourth set, 25-19, to extend the match. The Mustangs won a second set by two points, winning 15-13 in the fifth set to claim the victory. The set was tied 10 times and featured six lead changes, but SMU took control with the last lead change of the match, scoring on kills by Hannah Jacobs and Winkler. The score was tied two more times, but with SMU leading 14-13, Memphis' attack sailed long, giving SMU the win.

Winkler hit .531 in the win, and Meryn Kennedy added 12 kills and six blocks. Hannah Jacobs scored 11 kills, reaching double-figures for the 18th time this season. Lily Heim tallied 48 assists and 16 digs for her 13th double-double of the season. Montana Watts recorded 34 digs, tied for ninth in a match all-time at SMU. Bria' Merchant posted a career-high 14 digs, and Kendall Patterson had 10 as SMU recorded 91 digs.

SMU erased a late four-point deficit in the third set and outlasted Memphis to win 27-25 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Trailing 21-17, the Mustangs scored four of the next five points, with a pair of kills by Winkler, to cut the lead to one, 22-21. Kennedy later scored a kill to tie the score, 23-23. A Memphis attack error on the next point gave SMU its first lead since holding a 6-5 advantage. Memphis fought off the first two set-point attempts before Kennedy slammed one straight down on the third opportunity for the victory.

After a six-point loss in the first set, SMU responded with a dominant, 25-15 win in the second set. Memphis held SMU to just seven kills and a .000 attack percentage to start the match. The Mustangs answered with 13 kills and a .286 attack percentage, while holding the Tigers to a -.067 percentage and seven kills. Jacobs led the offensive onslaught with six kills, and six Mustangs scored in the set.

SMU returns home to face UCF Sunday at 1 p.m. in Moody Coliseum. Fans are asked to bring clothing, toiletries and canned goods as donations for Dallas Life.
