Box Score WICHITA, Kan. (SMU) – Rachel Woulfe scored a career-high 22 kills to lead SMU to a 3-1 win at Wichita State Friday night (25-23, 26-28, 25-18, 31-29). The sophomore had six of her kills in the fourth set, but it was her block with
Meryn Kennedy that was the biggest point of the match.
With a 30-29 lead in the fourth set, SMU was battling to avoid a decisive fifth set. Megan Taflinger, who led the Shockers with 13 kills, approached her attack from the left side of the net. She hit it into the block set by Woulfe and Kennedy, and the ball went straight to the floor to end the match.
With the win, SMU improved to 16-7 overall, 9-4 in the American Athletic Conference. The Mustangs climbed into a tie with Houston for first place in the west division.
SMU, consistently one of the top defensive teams in its conference, posted 14 blocks and 84 digs, holding Wichita State (7-18, 4-9 The American) to a .195 attack percentage. However, it was an equally dominant effort by the Mustangs' offense.
Lily Heim set a career-high 63 assists, guiding four attackers to double-digit kills for the first time this season.
Hannah Jacobs scored 16 kills, and
Kaylyn Winkler and
Mekenzi Heckmann each tallied 13. Heckmann posted 12 in the last three sets, after playing only one point in the first set. SMU outscored Wichita State 75-56. Heim also recorded 20 digs, and
Montana Watts finished with 21.
The Mustangs bounced back from a second-set loss with a 25-18 win in the third set. With the score tied, 7-7, SMU outscored the Shockers 8-4, taking a 15-11 lead into the media timeout. The lead was still four, 21-17, before SMU scored four of the last five points for the seven-point win.
Woulfe scored 10 kills in the first set, and SMU scored five of the last seven points for a 25-23 win. Woulfe scored three kills during the final stretch, but it was Heckmann scoring on set point for the win. The freshman entered the match for the first time just before the final serve.
In the second set, it was Wichita State edging out the Mustangs, 28-26, to even the match. SMU led, 23-19, but the Shockers scored five straight to take a 24-23 lead. SMU fought off three set-point attempts before the Shockers posted a block on their fourth set-point chance for the win.
SMU plays its final road match of the regular season Sunday at Tulsa. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
