SMU continues its four-game homestand by hosting Northwestern State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 at home with a 70-51 win against Abilene Christian on Friday.
SMU was among those receiving votes in Monday's AP Top 25 Poll. The Mustangs have been in the AP Poll in six of the past seven seasons.
The Mustangs were crowned champions won the Southwestern Showdown presented by Engage Telehealth. SMU went 4-0, winning at UNLV and at home versus Jackson State, Hartford and Abilene Christian. Kendric Davis was selected MVP with Tyson Jolly and Feron Hunt named to the all-tournament team.
In the win over Abilene Christian, four Mustangs scored in double figures and two had double-doubles. It was the second-straight game for both of those feats. Kendric Davis had 17 points and 10 assists while Feron Hunt scored 17 with 10 rebounds. Tyson Jolly had a team-high 18 points while Isiaha Mike scored 12. The Mustangs had a 33-23 rebound advantage, the third double-digit margin of the season. SMU held ACU to 32.7% shooting, the sixth straight opponent under 40%.
The homestand follows two road wins last week, 59-57 at Evansville on Nov. 18 and 72-68 at UNLV on Nov. 23. The Mustangs are off to a 7-0 start for the first time since 2015-16, when the team started 18-0. It is the longest win streak for the Mustangs since a 16-game stretch from Jan. 15 to March 12 of 2017.
SMU is 44-10 in regular-season non-conference games under Tim Jankovich. The Mustangs are 36-3 at Moody Coliseum in those games, 3-4 in neutral-site games and 5-3 in true road games.

HUNTING FOR REBOUNDS: Feron Hunt is averaging 8.7 rebounds (T-5th AAC). He had a season-high 13 rebounds vs New Orleans. He has 7 or more rebounds in 24 of 39 games in his career, including 5 of 7 this season (10+ 4 times this season). Hunt shared the team lead in rebounding at 6.4 per game as a freshman last season. He was just the sixth Mustang to lead the team as a freshman.
FINDING THE RANGE: Isiaha Mike is hitting 51.6% from 3-point range (16-31) this season. That is fifth in the AAC. His 2.3 threes made per game are fourth in the AAC. He is now 39.5% from three in his time at SMU, which ranks 11th in program history.

LAST GAME (W, 70-51 vs Abilene Christian on Nov. 29): DALLAS (AP) -- Tyson Jolly had 18 points as SMU won its seventh straight game to open the season, defeating Abilene Christian 70-51 on Friday night. With the win, SMU was crowned champions of the 2019 Southwestern Showdown Presented by Engage Telehealth. Kendric Davis and Feron Hunt each added a double-double for the Mustangs. Davis finished with 17 points and 10 assists while also scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Isiaha Mike had 12 points for SMU (7-0). Joe Pleasant scored a career-high 20 points for the Wildcats (2-5). Payten Ricks added 15 points.
THE SERIES VS NORTHWESTERN STATE (6-0): The Mustangs have never lost to the Demons, since 1953 these programs have played 6 times, all in Moody, where the Mustangs have emerged victorious.
LAST MEETING VS NORTHWESTERN STATE (W, 69-58 in Moody on Nov. 8, 2018): DALLAS (AP) -- Jimmy Whitt Jr. scored 19 points while dishing out five assists to help lead SMU to a season-opening 69-58 victory over Northwestern State. Whitt was 7 of 12 from the field and made 4 of 5 free-throw attempts. Nat Dixon had 13 points and Ethan Chargois added nine points with nine rebounds as the Mustangs won their 33rd straight home nonconference game. Northwestern State took an early lead. SMU's Feron Hunt drove for a layup with 11:25 left in the first half to give the Mustangs their first lead at 12-11 and SMU took a 34-29 advantage into the break. Whitt opened the second half with a 3-point play and Chargois followed with a trey for a 40-31 lead and the Mustangs gradually pulled away. The Mustangs had 32 points in the paint, compared to 18 for Northwestern State. Ishmael Lane had 24 points and 13 rebounds for Northwestern State (1-1). Lane also recorded two blocks and two steals.
UP NEXT: The Mustangs conclude the four-game homestand with Georgetown on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. SMU then has 13 days until a matchup at Georgia on Dec. 20.

HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his fourth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 37th season as a collegiate coach, and his 15th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 235-159 (.596) [78-38 at SMU (.672), including 53-13 at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and eight NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. COACHING FOR LITERACY (CoachingForLiteracy.org): This is the sixth straight season SMU has hosted a CFL game (Dec. 3 vs Northwestern State - partnering with Veritex Community Bank to support Readers 2 Leaders). Jonathan Wilfong (SMU '17) and Andrew Renshaw, two then-high school seniors from Memphis, Tennessee, founded Coaching for Literacy in 2012. Proceeds raised from the event go towards funding effective literacy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. Coaching for Literacy partners with collegiate and professional sports teams. --- The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy. By leveraging the unique power of collegiate and professional sports, Coaching for Literacy raises money to supports effective local literacy programs and schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students. SMU hosted two CFL events in 2014-15, two in 2015-16 and one in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19. In 2016-17, the SMU staff wore neon green ties during a three-game stretch as part of the awareness effort from the home win against Stanford on Dec. 19 through the win a Memphis, WIlfong's home town, on Dec. 27.

The Mustangs were crowned champions won the Southwestern Showdown presented by Engage Telehealth. SMU went 4-0, winning at UNLV and at home versus Jackson State, Hartford and Abilene Christian. Kendric Davis was selected MVP with Tyson Jolly and Feron Hunt named to the all-tournament team.
In the win over Abilene Christian, four Mustangs scored in double figures and two had double-doubles. It was the second-straight game for both of those feats. Kendric Davis had 17 points and 10 assists while Feron Hunt scored 17 with 10 rebounds. Tyson Jolly had a team-high 18 points while Isiaha Mike scored 12. The Mustangs had a 33-23 rebound advantage, the third double-digit margin of the season. SMU held ACU to 32.7% shooting, the sixth straight opponent under 40%.
The homestand follows two road wins last week, 59-57 at Evansville on Nov. 18 and 72-68 at UNLV on Nov. 23. The Mustangs are off to a 7-0 start for the first time since 2015-16, when the team started 18-0. It is the longest win streak for the Mustangs since a 16-game stretch from Jan. 15 to March 12 of 2017.
SMU is 44-10 in regular-season non-conference games under Tim Jankovich. The Mustangs are 36-3 at Moody Coliseum in those games, 3-4 in neutral-site games and 5-3 in true road games.

HUNTING FOR REBOUNDS: Feron Hunt is averaging 8.7 rebounds (T-5th AAC). He had a season-high 13 rebounds vs New Orleans. He has 7 or more rebounds in 24 of 39 games in his career, including 5 of 7 this season (10+ 4 times this season). Hunt shared the team lead in rebounding at 6.4 per game as a freshman last season. He was just the sixth Mustang to lead the team as a freshman.
FINDING THE RANGE: Isiaha Mike is hitting 51.6% from 3-point range (16-31) this season. That is fifth in the AAC. His 2.3 threes made per game are fourth in the AAC. He is now 39.5% from three in his time at SMU, which ranks 11th in program history.

LAST GAME (W, 70-51 vs Abilene Christian on Nov. 29): DALLAS (AP) -- Tyson Jolly had 18 points as SMU won its seventh straight game to open the season, defeating Abilene Christian 70-51 on Friday night. With the win, SMU was crowned champions of the 2019 Southwestern Showdown Presented by Engage Telehealth. Kendric Davis and Feron Hunt each added a double-double for the Mustangs. Davis finished with 17 points and 10 assists while also scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Isiaha Mike had 12 points for SMU (7-0). Joe Pleasant scored a career-high 20 points for the Wildcats (2-5). Payten Ricks added 15 points.
THE SERIES VS NORTHWESTERN STATE (6-0): The Mustangs have never lost to the Demons, since 1953 these programs have played 6 times, all in Moody, where the Mustangs have emerged victorious.
LAST MEETING VS NORTHWESTERN STATE (W, 69-58 in Moody on Nov. 8, 2018): DALLAS (AP) -- Jimmy Whitt Jr. scored 19 points while dishing out five assists to help lead SMU to a season-opening 69-58 victory over Northwestern State. Whitt was 7 of 12 from the field and made 4 of 5 free-throw attempts. Nat Dixon had 13 points and Ethan Chargois added nine points with nine rebounds as the Mustangs won their 33rd straight home nonconference game. Northwestern State took an early lead. SMU's Feron Hunt drove for a layup with 11:25 left in the first half to give the Mustangs their first lead at 12-11 and SMU took a 34-29 advantage into the break. Whitt opened the second half with a 3-point play and Chargois followed with a trey for a 40-31 lead and the Mustangs gradually pulled away. The Mustangs had 32 points in the paint, compared to 18 for Northwestern State. Ishmael Lane had 24 points and 13 rebounds for Northwestern State (1-1). Lane also recorded two blocks and two steals.
UP NEXT: The Mustangs conclude the four-game homestand with Georgetown on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. SMU then has 13 days until a matchup at Georgia on Dec. 20.

HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his fourth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 37th season as a collegiate coach, and his 15th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 235-159 (.596) [78-38 at SMU (.672), including 53-13 at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and eight NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. COACHING FOR LITERACY (CoachingForLiteracy.org): This is the sixth straight season SMU has hosted a CFL game (Dec. 3 vs Northwestern State - partnering with Veritex Community Bank to support Readers 2 Leaders). Jonathan Wilfong (SMU '17) and Andrew Renshaw, two then-high school seniors from Memphis, Tennessee, founded Coaching for Literacy in 2012. Proceeds raised from the event go towards funding effective literacy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. Coaching for Literacy partners with collegiate and professional sports teams. --- The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy. By leveraging the unique power of collegiate and professional sports, Coaching for Literacy raises money to supports effective local literacy programs and schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students. SMU hosted two CFL events in 2014-15, two in 2015-16 and one in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19. In 2016-17, the SMU staff wore neon green ties during a three-game stretch as part of the awareness effort from the home win against Stanford on Dec. 19 through the win a Memphis, WIlfong's home town, on Dec. 27.
