DALLAS (SMU) - The Mustangs fell at home on Thursday night to the ECU Pirates, 64-54, inside Moody Coliseum.
The Pirates held the early edge over the Mustangs in the first period, leading by as many as eight. They had a four-point edge after the first quarter which the Mustangs erased with two quick second quarter buckets. SMU never led in the half, but kept it at three points at the intermission.
Alicia Froling broke out for eight points in the second quarter.
ECU started the second with a 7-0 run in the first two minutes to stretch their edge to 10. The Mustangs chipped away, but a late Pirate run put SMU down 13 heading into the game's final period.
After finding themselves down 18 with nine minutes left, the Mustangs went on a rally fueled by good passing and tight defense that brought the game to within 10. ECU would control the final minutes to finish out the 10-point win.
The Mustangs fell to 8-16 on the season and 2-9 in American Athletic Conference play. The Pirates improved to 13-11 and 5-7 in conference, while winning their first true road game of the season.
Froling led the team in both points and rebounds with a 15-point night that included nine boards. Froling added five blocks to her programs block record.
Johnasia Cash (11) and
Ariana Whitfield (10) both had double-digit scoring nights. Whitfield led the Mustangs with seven assists.
ECU's Lashonda Monk, the conference's leader in steals per game (4.0), had a six-steal performance, giving her 13 steals in her last two games.
