Feb 17

Box Score FINAL BOX   | SMU Season Stats (as of Feb. 17)

WICHITA, Kansas (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs (8-17, 2-10 AAC) fell to the Wichita State Shockers (11-13, 4-7 AAC), 53-42, inside Charles Koch Arena, Sunday afternoon. Just a month and two days earlier, the Mustangs earned their first conference win after defeating the Shockers 78-50 at Moody Coliseum.

This is the fourth conference win for Wichita State, while the Mustangs remain 2-10 in the American and 0-9 in away games.

Kayla White got the Mustangs off to a hot start in scoring by taking down a three (her first of four in the game) after about 30 seconds of play. White led the Mustangs in scoring with 14 points. However, after her early three, the Mustangs struggled to execute on the glass, and Wichita State pulled out to a 23-7 lead.

In second quarter action, SMU improved their scoring to 11 points, but still trailed the Shockers 37-18 after quarter two. Both teams struggled to ignite the offense in the third quarter, with the Mustangs outscoring Wichita State, 9-5.

SMU continued to fight in the fourth, with a 15-point performance (compared to the Shockers' 11-point quarter). But, it wasn't enough to eclipse the large lead Wichita State accumulated early on.

Although SMU outrebounded Wichita State (45-25) and won out in second chance points (7-2), as well as points in the paint (12-10), the Shockers edged out SMU in steals (16-10) and assists (15-7). The teams tied in bench points (15) and fast break points (9).

Alicia Froling led the team in rebounds with 11, while JaQuia White propelled the Red & Blue in assists at a team-high 4, in addition to notching a bucket. Ariana Whitfield tallied five points, and Makenzie Ellis netted six. BriShonne Tollie also contributed four points and seven rebounds to the Mustangs. Ellis and Tollie went 4-4 on free throws, shooting perfect from the charity stripe.

Up next, SMU will compete against Temple this Wednesday at home. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
