MANHATTAN, Kan. (SMU) – No. 39 SMU women's tennis dropped a tough 4-3 loss to No. 50 Kansas State inside the Body First Indoor Tennis Center Thursday afternoon, snapping its four-match win streak.

The Mustangs fell to 4-4 on the season, with all four losses coming by a score of 4-3, while the Wildcats fell to 6-2.

The No. 55-ranked doubles duo of seniors Liza Buss and Anzhelika Shapovalova started the day with a 6-3 win over Margot Decker and Anna Turco at No. 1 doubles, their third consecutive win. Senior Karina Traxler and junior Tiffany Hollebeck secured the doubles point for the Mustangs with a 6-4 victory on Court 3. The duo has now won nine matches in a row, and holds a 10-1 record this season, including 7-0 in dual play.

After K-State evened the score at 1-1 with a victory on Court 1, Shapovalova pushed the Mustangs ahead 2-1 by defeating Ines Mesquita 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Senior Vivienne Kulicke, the No. 117 singles player in the nation, extended the lead with a big third-set tiebreaker win at No. 2 singles. Kulicke has won five straight matches and holds a team-best 16-4 singles record this year.

The bottom of the lineup carried the Wildcats to victory, winning at No.4, 5 and 6 singles.

The Mustangs are back in action tomorrow, Feb. 22, playing at Wichita State at 1 p.m.
