Mustangs Drop Battle at Wichita State, 4-3

– No. 39 SMU dropped an American Athletic Conference women's tennis battle at Wichita State, 4-3 at the Wichita Country Club on Friday afternoon. The Mustangs fell to 4-5 on the season and 1-1 in AAC play while the Shockers improved to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

SMU has lost five dual matches this season, but all five have come by a score of 4-3. In a tightly contested match-up, five of the six singles matches against Wichita State went to three sets.

Senior Anzhelika Shapovalova won her sixth straight match, defeating Marta Bellucco 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to tie the match 1-1 after the Shockers claimed the doubles point. Shapovalova has a 10-1 singles record this season, including 8-1 in dual play. Senior Ana Perez-Lopez gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after beating Lingwei Kong 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

The Shockers notched three straight victories on Courts 1, 2 and 5 to clinch the match. Sophomore Nicole Petchey won the last point of the day, defeating Ting-Ya Hsu at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

The Mustangs return to Dallas to host No. 32 Kentucky on Sunday, Feb. 24 at noon from the SMU Tennis Complex.
