DALLAS (SMU) – No. 39 SMU women's tennis fell to No. 32 Kentucky, 4-1 inside Turpin Stadium at the SMU Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Mustangs dropped their third straight match to fall to 4-6 on the season, while the Wildcats won their fifth consecutive contest to improve to 10-1.
The doubles point was decided in dramatic fashion. After Kentucky won on Court 1, Courts 2 and 3 went to tiebreaks simultaneously. Juniors
Tiffany Hollebeck and
Sarai Monarrez Yesaki, playing together for the first time since the fall, won 7-6 (5) at No. 3 after a powerful forehand from Monarrez Yesaki. Seniors
Vivienne Kulicke and
Ana Perez-Lopez fought back from 4-2 to tie the match at 6-6, but eventually fell in a marathon tiebreak, 10-8.
Senior
Anzhelika Shapovalova won the lone point for the Mustangs Sunday, defeating Akvile Parazinskaite in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Shapovalova has won seven straight matches and holds a team-best 11-1 singles record.
Kulicke, ranked 117th in the nation in singles, led Lesedi Jacobs 7-5, 3-2 at No. 3 singles when play halted following Kentucky's clinching point.
SMU has a long break before competing again on March 9 at Houston. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
