INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) – Erin Trahan and
Andrea Podmanikova led the Mustangs on night three of the American Athletic Conference Championships with individual event wins. Trahan paced the field in the 100-yard butterfly, while Podmanikova was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke.
SMU extended its lead on third-place Cincinnati, and have 406 team points after night three. Houston continues to lead the six-team field with 624. The Bearcats sit at 379.5, and Tulane (350.5), Connecticut (336) and Tulane (213) round out the group.
The win for Trahan tonight was just as exciting as her 50-yard freestyle on night two, as she posted an NCAA B Standard and climbed SMU's all-time top performer list. The junior's time of 51.92 is well under the 53.76 standard and moved her to third in the program rankings. It also gave the Mustangs their sixth straight victory in the event, with Trahan winning in 2018 and Marne Erasmus sweeping from 2014-17.
Felicity Passon joined Trahan on the 100 fly podium with a third place finish, giving her an NCAA B cut for the second consecutive season with a career mark of 53.29.
Olivia Grossklaus (55.35) and
Madison Kinsey (55.67) posted personal bests to place 12th and 14th, respectively overall out of the Consolation Final.
Podmanikova, who won the 200-yard breaststroke as a freshman, added a 100 championship to her résumé as she took down the defending champion. It was a .03 margin of victory, with Podmanikova coming in at 59.81 to stay under the NCAA provisional standard. Newcomer
Fernanda Jiménez Peón, who only joined the team in January, placed eighth in the final with a time of 1:02.64.
Freshman
Elise Johnson was 15th overall, clocking at 1:04.84.
Passon found her way back to the podium, this time with a silver-medal performance in the 100-yard backstroke. Her 53.52 earned her the first NCAA B cut of her career in the event. The time also places her seventh on SMU's all-time top performer list.
Gabi Grobler scored for the Mustangs in the final as well, finishing eighth.
Sam Smith and
Kiley Vandevier picked up points in the Consolation Final at 12th and 14th, respectively.
In diving action, SMU had three Mustangs make the Championship Final after each posted a career best and NCAA Zone qualifying score in three-meter prelims.
Katie Crown, the conference one-meter champion, placed fourth, while
Johanna Holloway was fifth and
Taylor Ohlhauser sixth.
Other finals performances included Johnson (14th) and
Lindsey Blanchard (15th) in the 400-yard individual medley and
El Yellin (16th) in the 200-yard freestyle.
The night ended with an exciting 400-yard medley relay in which Passon, Podmanikova, Trahan and Grobler teamed up for a runner-up finish, covering the distance in 3:34.81.
