BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (SMU) – Chelsea Francis is set to represent the Mustangs at this weekend's NCAA Track and Field Indoor Championships from the Birmingham CrossPlex. The junior will compete in the 60-meter dash, with the semifinal set for 6:57 p.m. on Friday.
Â
Francis is fresh off a gold-medal winning performance in the event at the American Conference Championships. Her time of 7.26 in the prelims was the boost she needed to clinch a spot at the NCAAs. It was also a meet record for the AACs.
Â
In the finals, the Carrollton, Texas native attempted to improve on her silver winning showing at the 2018 AACs, where she finished just .01 seconds shy of the top. Francis took home the top spot in the final by a .03 second margin.
Â
The junior becomes the first Mustang to qualify for the NCAA Indoors since Stephanie Kalu in 2014. Kalu finished 13th in the 60-meter. The Mustangs have had four athletes win national championships at the Indoors: Teri Tunks 1998-Shot Put, Marika Tuliniemi 1999-Shot Put, Nevena Lendel 2003-High Jump and Florence Ezeh 2000 & 2001-Weight Throw.
Â
The Championships will be available to watch on ESPN3. The prelims of the 60-meter are slated for 6:57 on Friday with the top two in each of the two heats advancing as well as the next four fastest times. The final of the 60 will be at 5:10 p.m. on Saturday.
Â
After the Indoors, the Mustangs will begin their outdoor campaign on March 14 as they head to Houston for the Spring Break Invitational.
