DALLAS (SMU) – A total of 26 honors went to 24 student-athletes at Monday night's SMU Honors Convocation. Honors Convocation is a tradition at SMU that recognizes new honor society inductees, school and departmental awards, national fellowships, various distinguished scholarships and internships, as well as graduating University Honors Program students.
The rowing program saw five of its student-athletes earn University Honors, including
Melissa Chambers,
Emily Fogg, Megan Grotto,
Adelaide Moore and
Brittany Rigg. Both Grotto and Rigg were honored by the Simmons School of Education and Human Development, Grotto with a Sport Management Departmental Distinction Award and Rigg as an Outstanding Pre-Service Educator.
Chambers was named to the University Honors Program and Fogg an Outstanding Senior in Markets and Culture, while Moore joined Pi Tau Sigma, which recognizes mechanical engineering students who possess sound engineering ability, scholarship and personality.
Women's swimming and diving took home five total honors as well, including a pair for
Kelcie Winters, who was honored by the Cox School of Business as a Distinguished Finance Major and with the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key. Both
Casey Rose and
El Yellin earned Sport Management Departmental Distinction Awards, while
Keegan Pho was inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon in the Lyle School of Engineering.
Equestrian's
Savannah Ostner was selected for the university's Mortar Board chapter, a national honor society recognizing college seniors for superior achievement in scholarship, leadership and service, as well as Tau Sigma, an academic honor society designed specifically to recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students.
Also joining Mortar Board were
Grant Makela (men's soccer) and
Katina Tsapos (women's soccer), while football student-athlete
Kevin Miles was selected for Tau Sigma.
Simmons recognized four student-athletes with Sport Performance Leadership Departmental Distinction Awards, including
Makenzie Ellis (women's basketball),
Pono Davis (football),
Matt McNew (football) and
Brittany Adams (volleyball). Additionally,
Brigitte Dunne (women's golf) earned a Sport Management Departmental Distinction Award from the school.
Three student-athletes were inducted into the Alpha Chi honor society, which recognizes those students who have reached junior standing and have a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher. Inductees include
Sara McCann (equestrian),
Montana Watts (volleyball) and
Ashton Woods (track and field).
Also recognized on Monday evening were
Christian Boorom (men's soccer),
Nathan Ciatti (men's swimming and diving) and
Vivienne Kulicke (women's tennis). Boorom was named an Outstanding Entrepreneurship Student by the Cox School of Business. Ciatti joined the Robert Stewart Hyer Society, which honors SMU's most intellectually gifted undergraduates who have distinguished themselves through high academic achievement. Kulicke earned the Philip H. Solomon Award in World Languages and Literatures for Spanish.
